Why Lights ? in fact... Why anything ?

Someone on another thread pointed out that the existence of lights on UFO's was confusing to them. UFO's are often sighted with and described as having lights and the poster, quite rightly wondered what the point of them would be.

If UFO's are visiting us covertly, why draw attention to themselves by flashing bright lights ? is it to warn other aircraft of their presence? is it to help them see ?

I thought this was an interesting subject and would value other peoples opinions. I understand this is all pretty much guess work on our part, but if you were a visiting alien, why might you need lights ?

The very real possibility is that these lights are not lights at all but rather the result of their propulsion systems. It has been speculated that their propulsion is based upon some system that allows them to change frequency/energy in order to travel the kinds of distances they are required to traverse. The lights may be some sort of energy 'exhaust' ports or possibly ionization of air surrounding some external component of their craft. Unlikley it's some kind of landing or recognition lights as seen on terrestrial aircraft.

I would say that most of the time lights & other things you have mentioned are present because the objects are terrestrial, and were conceived by human technology & imagination. On our planet they actually serve a purpose. Either functional for the military, or a real "attention getter", for the hoaxes.

Some other lights may be a type of residual aura produced from anti-gravity propulsion?

This was all covered in that other thread I believe. . .

I tend to think that if other life forms are visiting us they may have no need for a physical craft at all.

Lights:

Someone suggested it was unlikely that they were used to help the pilots "see"
Considering the stereotypical "ray" with their large elongated dark coloured eyes, One could postulate that they see in a different spectrum and that the red and green light acts as a filter for them.

Another visual possibility which would make sense given a previous "no windows" comment is that they are bouncing light off objects to form an understanding of their surroundings. Although we're used to such navigation systems in more primative life forms, it really is far more advanced and accurate form of navigation than the visual guestimates we use to navigate our own vehicles.
