Would you use the lash, whipping the is, to cure depression? At least one doctor thinks it would work.

Russian scientists from the city of Novosibirsk, Siberia, made a sensational report at the international conference devoted to new methods of treatment and rehabilitation in narcology. The report was called “Methods of painful impact to treat addictive behavior.”

Siberian scientists believe that addiction to alcohol and narcotics, as well as depression, suicidal thoughts and psychosomatic diseases occur when an individual loses his or her interest in life. The absence of the will to live is caused with decreasing production of endorphins - the substance, which is known as the hormone of happiness. If a depressed individual receives a physical punishment, whipping that is, it will stir up endorphin receptors, activate the “production of happiness” and eventually remove depressive feelings.

Russian scientists recommend the following course of the whipping therapy: 30 sessions of 60 whips on the buttocks in every procedure. A group of drug addicts volunteered to test the new method of treatment: the results can be described as good and excellent.

I know endorphins are the body natural pain killer. And the story links the lack of endorphins to addiction. So the theory is the more endorphins you have the less likely you are to fall into addiction and the happier you are. So should we all under go whipping therapy to keep the endorphins flowing so we stay happy?

Well I for one am surprised that this idea has not come and gone yet.
People self mutilate because it gives you endorphins, and people get addicted to that feeling, so what is to say that certain drug addictees or whoever else this is tryed on wont get addicted to the pain, are we to trade off one addiction for the other?

Pshkwamy,
yes that I right, and I do agree with you. The doctor quoted in the article did say that he used self inflicting pain to cure him self but also claims he is not a masochist. I cant argue that pain treatment is certainly cheaper then drugs. And I got a little laugh when the article said that the the treatment is more effective when it is given by a member of the opposite sex, haha go figure. All in all I think what ever work for the individual or to each his own.
