A new technology useing nanoparticals has been used to make fabrics that can repeal particals like dirt, liquides and bacteria. It is being said that these fabrics can be worn for weeks hygenicaly.

The new technology attaches nanoparticles to clothing fibers using microwaves. Then, chemicals that can repel water, oil and bacteria are directly bound to the nanoparticles. These two elements combine to create a protective coating on the fibers of the material.

This coating both kills bacteria, and forces liquids to bead and run off.

The U.S. military spent more than $20 million to develop the fabric, deriving from research originally intended to protect soldiers from biological weapons.

So would you wear your underwear for weeks with out changeing them? Or maby even the coveralls worn by your mechanic.

You Wear Underwear ??? :shk:
Go commando and give the boys some room to swing....

I do see some great uses for a product like this.
Imagine all medical staff wearing bacteria proof gowns, or food service people in garments that can't transfer the germs.
And what a great idea for kids clothing, you know how often their stuff has to be washed.

I think we're just on the cusp of a massive change in technology and nanotech will change our future in ways we can't even imagine.

Yes I do think you might be right there. But the thing is even if these fabrics do become common, I do see people going weeks with out cleaning them. I think it is civilised nature to do so on a daily basis when able to do so.
People like military, or emergency services who might go days with out access to services would be the first to use the fabric I think.

Omg, are you supposed to change your underwear.
All these years, why didnt someone tell me sooner.

Seriously, nanotechnology is really going to be the next huge step in our evolution imo. Being involved in a manufacturing industry we are already researching how nano developments can be introduced into our market as im sure most smart operators are doing.

Mojo
yes I do think they could be also. I also said much the same thing about biotechnology's. Its interesting that you are saying this from the manufacturing point of view though. So you are already getting ready to manufacturer the nanotechnoligies or use the products or what?

Our R&D dept is looking at how nanotechnology can be used to either

A. Manufacture our products
B. Improve quality control
C. Improve lead times and cut waste

or all of the above. I know that other businesses are already investing in this technology or soon will be, if they dont they will be left behind. There are major benefits to be gained particularly from an engineering standpoint im led to believe by our R&D guys.

Globalspec

A recent survey of IEEE members noted that within 20 years it should be possible to manufacture nanostructured materials; while two-thirds of those surveyed predicted there would be tools for designing at the nanoscale as well. Experts say that nanofactory products will be inexpensive to produce and quick to develop. So just what is molecular manufacturing or the use of nanoscale machines to create products by manipulating individual molecules? This PDF file describes designs and techniques for creating these machines using precise, engineered, computer controlled, nanoscale tools to construct vast numbers of improved tools and the design approaches of creating nanomaterials

Sure, I wear my coveralls all the time. Have'nt warshed 'em yet!

just kidding, I don't even own coveralls.

But I did notice your source was Pravda. That epitome of true journalism. :shk:

But I do change my underwear at least once a month.

Yes it is Pravda, which is why it is posted in BTS. But it does make for an interesting story and they did refrence the U.S. Air Force.
