Just checked the USGS site, and nothing alarming has shown yet. It may not be up yet, but I'd be willing to set a guess at it as being connected (even peripherially) to the quake the other day (the 8.2) off Hokkaido. Sort of like a projected aftershock - new pressure was set over onto that faultline under Tokyo, and it slipped to adjust for the new pressure from the Hokkaido rupture. Slip faults are notorious for putting pressure on outlying fault lines (like the great elbow of the San Andreas...).

Then again, this is all conjecture, because I can't find anything yet for Tokyo...it could be a brand new, unrelated quake.

TOKYO, Jan 16 (Reuters) - A moderate earthquake with a preliminary magnitude of 5.7 jolted central Japan on Tuesday, the Japan Meteorological Agency said. The quake, at 3:18 a.m. (1818 GMT), was also felt in Tokyo.

There were no immediate reports of injuries or damage.

The focus of the tremor was 170 km (105 miles) below the surface of the earth, in Shizuoka prefecture, 150 km west of Tokyo, the JMA said.

An earthquake with a magnitude of 5.7 struck Japan early on Tuesday, rocking buildings in the capital city but causing no tsunami.

No injuries or damage were immediately reported.

The quake struck at 3:18 am and was centred 105 miles underground in Shizuoka state, about 94 miles west of Tokyo, according to Japan's meteorological agency.

Lights shook some 360 miles northeast of the capital.

Tuesday's quake came after a magnitude 8.2 shock off northern Japan triggered tsunami warnings on Saturday, sending thousands fleeing to higher ground but causing no reported injuries or damage.

More than three hours after the quake, the largest wave, at 16 inches, hit Chichi-jima, an island of 2,000 people about 620 miles south of Tokyo.

Japan sits atop four tectonic plates and is one of the world's most earthquake-prone countries.

The last devastating quake to hit Tokyo was in 1923, when an earthquake with a magnitude 8.3 killed 142,000 people.
