I think I saw a movie about this once... Night of the Lepus

'They were born that tragic moment when science made its great mistake... now from behind the shroud of night they come, a scuttling, shambling horde of creatures destroying all in their path.'

There's no way this can end well!

Not to high jack this thread ,but:

We have to accept that the myth that only animal foods give us the high-quality protein we need is just that – a myth. The Dietitians of Canada and the American Dietetic Association (DC-ADA), in their latest position paper on vegetarian diets, writes, "Plant sources of protein alone can provide adequate amounts of essential amino acids if a variety of plant foods are consumed and energy needs are met."

I don't think you are hijacking the thread, After all, it is about feeding the hungry and acre per acre agricultural use is more efficient than raising livestock.

Personally I am an omnivore and will eat just about anything. In general, the bulk of my diet is primarily plant matter with some animal protein mixed in. Much like an Asian diet. I believe North Korea is looking into alternative, and easy to rear, livestock. Rabbits beat dogs, and most other livestock, in that category by a long shot. With Bird Flu becoming a serious problem for chicken and duck farmers, rabbits are a good alternative.

The North Koreans just need bigger fuzzy-huggly-bunnies.

God, shoot me for that.

Sorry,

Good points. Rabbits better than sheep? Interesting. Why is it so difficult to get rabbit meat in a grocery store in the US though?

Another alternative for North Korea is to adopt a modern, liberal democratic government, more like South Korea, which doesn't have an issue of famines.

this rabbit is a "geant des flandres" (flanders giant) like vlaanderen , the belgian region (eventhough there are regions called flanders in the Netherlands and France aswell , but that is another story )

10 kg is nothing unusual for such a rabbit , seen a few around here in expos

now for the korean food shortage , i do agree that i would make more sense switching to a more vegetarian diet

here a more realistic picture , not the biggest but still impressive

Perspective. The photos are obvious perspective shots, simply to enhance the story. It sums up the gullability of some people that this has gotten 2 threads so far. Nobody is really doubting that these so called giant rabbits exist, but 10kg is only 19 pounds. I have a cat that weights 16 pounds. The photo is shot to make the rabbit appear to be the size of a large dog of 100 pounds or so. The specifics of rabbit meat versus vegetables versus protein is over thinking these pictures. While these are large, giant is an exaggeration.

BTW- so if Fox News reports it, it has to be real? Well, Weekly World News reported on this years ago and everyone just ignored them! LOL!

What is it with communists and GIANT food?

Back in his early days Fidel Castro had a dream of Farms of Strawberries as big as your head, and almost as big as HIS head.

Giant berries

It's about halfway down the page

National Public Radio ran with this story today. If you are interested you can hear it online from their web page and see some more pictures from a better angle. NPR.org

As usual, NPR is behind ATS when it comes to getting the story in a timely manner.

This rabbit below was 40 kg (88lbs) when the picture was taken...

The one below must be a fake. ..

Kim apparently ate all the monster rabbits himself at his birthday party. Szmolinsky says he won't sell any more rabbits to North Korea.

Kim Jong-il eats German monster bunnies meant to boost meat production in N. Korea!

Among the rabbits sent to North Korea was Robert, who won a prize as Germany's largest rabbit.

Even as the North Korean embassy in Berlin has denied the rabbits are dead, Szmolinsky is certain he won't be sending any of his rabbits to North Korea again.

"North Korea won't be getting any more rabbits from me, they don't even need to bother asking," Der Spiegel quoted Szmolinsky as saying.

North Korea is going to screw themselves over. I remember reading an article in the local paper once about this German rabbit breeder. Though rabbits are towards the healthier side of the meat market, these giants cost too much to raise for food. They eat far more than they're size is worth.

Now, if they're willing to eat lots of dairy products, Miniature Jersey cattle are their best bet. They use up 1/3 of the land and food that a regular size jersey needs, yet they give 2/3 dairy product.

Whoever said that rabbit meat was "blech", you must have eaten some bad meat or had it cooked bad. Rabbit is delicious barbequed. Better than any poultry. I enjoy plenty of rabbit meat, provided by my redtailed hawk hunting partner.

Rabbit Starvation is a form of acute malnutrition that occurs when one eats an excessive amount of rabbit or, presumably, other very lean meats. Although very rare, this condition can actually lead to starvation due to an ability to digest a particular enzyme found in rabbit and other lean meats. Typically, the conditions that lead to this rare form of malnutrition occurs in "survival situations" where there is no other food available. It is ironic that one could be malnourished and even die of starvation when there might be an abundance of food available -- rabbits.

I'm not sure how this thread got bumped back up with no recent replies, but since it is I'll give it an update. LOL the party leaders in NK ate all the rabbits they were supposed to breed. Yes, Kim and his cronies ate every single one and not a morsel made it to any North Koreans outside the ruling cabal. Then, they had the audacity to ask the German guy for more rabbits. And, thankfully, he told them to F off. This was a few months back.

The source of this story is Spiegel. As they don't have a search function in English, you'll just have to take my word for it unless you want to look back through all the archives.
