Avian influenza – situation in Indonesia

The Ministry of Health in Indonesia has confirmed the country's 59th death from H5N1 avian influenza. The 38 year old woman from Tangerang, Banten Province whose infection was announced on 9 January, died in hospital on 11 January 2007.
The Ministry of Health has also confirmed a new case of human infection with the H5N1 avian influenza virus. The 22 year old woman from Banten Province developed symptoms on 3 January 2007 and remains in hospital. An initial investigation into the source of her exposure found reports of chicken deaths near her home in the days prior to symptom onset.
Of the 77 cases confirmed to date in Indonesia, 59 have been fatal.

Indonesia's bird flu death toll reaches 59: On Wednesday, a 14-year-old boy from a West Java village died at the same hospital from the virus.
Jakarta, Jan 12 - A 37-year-old Indonesian woman who cooked and ate a sick chicken has died from bird flu, becoming the country's 59th victim and second this year, a health official said Friday.
The woman, identified as Riyah, was a chicken vendor in West Jakarta and ate one of her own birds Dec 30, said Runizar Ruesin, an official at the Indonesian health ministry's bird flu information centre.
She was taken to a Jakarta hospital Jan 5 and was in a serious condition with the H5N1 avian influenza virus before dying late Thursday, Ruesin said. 'It's confirmed it was bird flu,' the official added.

Indonesia bird flu death hits 59
A 37-year-old Indonesian woman has died of bird flu, taking the country's human death toll to 59, a hospital official said in Indonesia. The woman, from Serpong town in western Java, had been diagnosed as positive for the virus earlier this week.

The woman died because of organs malfunction which is caused by bird flu virus H5N1, at Persahabatan Hospital, Indonesia. Since 2004 some 260 humans have been infected with bird flu in 10 countries, with about 157 fatalities, mostly in Asia, according to the World Health Organization.
Three teenagers suspected of being infected with bird flu
JAKARTA (JP): Three more teenagers, who are suspected of being infected with bird flu virus, were admitted Friday to Persahabatan Hospital, Jakarta.
The radio station quoted a family member of the three suspected bird flu patients that they slaughtered an unhealthy chicken last week, but unaware that those chicken would spread disease to them.
One of the three patients, who got a flu on Jan. 7, now suffers a bad cough with blood.
A suspected bird flu patient dies in Jakarta
JAKARTA (JP): A 27-year old woman patient, who is still suspected of being infected with bird flu, died at 11:00 p.m. on Friday night in Persahabatan Hospital, Jakarta, Metro TV station reported.
If later she is confirmed of being infected with bird flu, the death toll from the fatal bird flu in the country would reach 60 people.
Few days before she died, a 14-year-old boy and a 38-year-old woman died from bird flu in the same hospital.
