Here is a story some Bush bashers might want to read.

Bush Has Quietly Tripled Aid to Africa
Increase in Funding to Impoverished Continent Is Viewed as Altruistic or Pragmatic

By Michael A. Fletcher
Washington Post Staff Writer
Sunday, December 31, 2006; Page A04

President Bush's legacy is sure to be defined by his wielding of U.S. military power in Afghanistan and Iraq, but there is another, much softer and less-noticed effort by his administration in foreign affairs: a dramatic increase in U.S. aid to Africa.

The president has tripled direct humanitarian and development aid to the world's most impoverished continent since taking office and recently vowed to double that increased amount by 2010 -- to nearly $9 billion.

Well there is certainly a mixed bag.
Foreign aid needs to be overhauled or scarped to much of it ends up in the hands of corrupt politicians and government officials. Credit were credit is due the increase in trade with Africa is a good thing.

Due to the Africa lower importance the Neo Con ideology has stayed away which means the Bush admins measures stand half a chance of working.

You know, if this keeps up I'm not even going to enjoy being right all the time anymore.

The Neocon Afrikakorps at work

four African nations -- Sudan, Ethiopia, Egypt and Uganda -- rank among the world's top 10 recipients in aid from the United States.

Although some activists criticize Bush for not doing more to end the ongoing genocide in the Darfur region of Sudan, others credit him for playing a role in ending deadly conflicts in Liberia, the Congo and other parts of Sudan.

Meanwhile, Bush has overseen a steady rise in U.S. trade with Africa, which has doubled since 2001.

Our economic agenda in Africa is the crucial link that ties together the "accident" that befell John Garang, ARPCT, the recent Ethiopian invasion of Somalia, the Chad-Sudan war, and the coming rekindling of the Sudanese Civil War.

Of course Bush is being quiet about all of the "aid" that we're doling out to all of the right NGOs, economic interests, and demographics, just like he's being quiet about the fact that we killed the VP of Sudan and sent two pawns after the Union of Islamic Courts in Somalia. You know why he's being quiet about it? Because the only fitting slogan for the whole operation is already copyright protected... "Capetown to Cairo" ring a bell? Not to mention how nicely that ties in to parallels between the War on Terror and The Great Game.

If Bush wasn't being quiet about it, odds are that the Indian government would be pretty cheesed at us right now for trying to take them 60 years backwards in such a blatant fashion, even playing the same strategic moves the British did to hold India.

What do you want to bet that all of this charity ends up giving us new bases in the Central Theater, giving us greater trade leverage with India, clamping down on metal and energy resources that China might have gained exclusive access to, and bringing down several regimes that we can't go after ourselves at the moment?

Evil Bush- moving towards Pax Americana one "charitable donation" at a time.

Funneling money from an AIDS program to Christian groups and offering food aid in exchange for privatization of utilities and admission of American companies- oh no, we're not just throwing around money to increase the standing of factions that will benefit us the most, we're trying to help people out of the goodness of our hearts.

And Malaria relief? Wonder where they're building a canal to this time. Ask Columbia about that. When the US starts wanting to move in business interests and combat disease, you better grab your ankles, or they'll just hack off whatever part of your country they want and put it under the control of somebody who will.

DG, I see what you mean but I don't think the comparison is accurate. In Castro's case, he was quelling the discontent of people who could make his dictatorship difficult if they were to try. I'm not sure what difficulties those African nations/citizens could cause for Bush. There is also a big difference between a rice cooker and vaccines, clean water, food, schools.

I would honestly like to hear opinions on what Bush is actually trying to achieve by increasing US Aid to Africa, if it's not pure altruism and compassion.

edit....Other than those already stated by The Vagabond.

Whoa, you mean the aid is for humanitarian reasons? I thought it was for arms. In fact are you sure they received cash and that it is for all the people even the poor. He just doesn't seem like the giving type.

Actually most of the aid never get to go into the hands of the people in need but rather stays in the coffers of the ones in power.

There is $50 billion (over 5 times the $9 bill) that has been misplaced or lost in Iraq in the last 3 years in a war directed towards deposing 1 dictator and his regime, due to the nuclear capacity they were putting together, and the weapons of mass destruction they had. But, as president Bush said over 2 1/2 years ago: "Mission Accomplished".

Curious with the debt what it is, where is this money coming from?
