Ford: Bush has made a big mistake

WASHINGTON - President George W. Bush and his top advisers made a "big mistake" in their justification for invading Iraq, Gerald Ford told journalist Bob Woodward in an interview embargoed until after the former president's death.

Ford, who died on Tuesday at his home in California at age 93, said he would not have gone to war, based on what was known publicly at the time, said the report on The Washington Post Web site on Wednesday.

"I don't think, if I had been president, on the basis of the facts as I saw them publicly," Ford said, "I don't think I would have ordered the Iraq war. I would have maximized our effort through sanctions, through restrictions, whatever, to find another answer."

Looking at the facts I dont think theres any way anyone can justify the invasion of Iraq. Everything was spin and propaganda, lies to sell it. Most people didnt see it at the time, since they get their news from CNN and Fox News, which I dont consider a great source to get informed.

And after 9/11, people were scared to the point where they allowed the Bush White House to get away with almost anything. Which in retrospect was a horrible mistake. When we needed to be most vigilant of goverment, we as a people exchanged Liberty for "security", and now it has come back to bite us in the ass. Leasons learned.

I'm in total agreement, but the situation seems much more dire than that. The direction we're being led in now is towards the point of no return. There is a good chance that our fate is sealed already. The 2008 presidential election will not be held if my gut feeling is right. Is there any way this scenario could transpire without marshall law being implemented?

I dont see how it could be done. Probably an "attack" before the elections and martial law being implemented is the only way I can see this happening.

A decapitating attack on the congress would suffice. Thanks to new rules, the congress can continue to function even when most of their members are dead, which means that they could declare war, or empower the president to do any number of heinous things.

That said, I don't think we'll see Bush in '08. He's always been 'temporary' from what I hear.

The guy is a lightning rod, intended to polarize the political landscape and ease the transition for the next foil - who will probably be a hawk Dem.

Most Dems (and a fair number of fiscally-conservative Republicans too, I might add) are so angry about the shrub's performance, they would vote for a can of Spam to replace him. :shk:

This is not entirely true, we are still being trample on with our civil liberties. Look at RNC 04 there is a good example of civil liberties being raped. Then look out how Bloomberg stated that our right to free assembly was a privilege and not a right at all. But in either case time will tell. I agree with the one guy, I really don't see a election happening in 08 to be honest. I still think they are gearing us up for a massive attack soon. Nuke Perhaps.
