"It's important that life in liberated Iraq get back to normal as soon as possible," said Deputy Defense Secretary Paul Wolfowitz at a press conference Monday. "That's why we're making sure that Iraqis have the best Christmas ever—something they certainly wouldn't have had under Saddam Hussein's regime."

To that end, 25,000 troops from the 3rd Armored Cavalry Regiment and 82nd Airborne Division have been deployed. Their missions include the distribution of cookies and eggnog at major Iraqi city centers, the conscription of bell-ringers from among the Iraqi citizenry, and the enforcement of a new policy in which every man, woman, and child in Baghdad pays at least one visit to 'Twas The Night... On Ice.

www.theonion.com...

im not saying its a bad idea to bring christmas to iraq... what i am saying is that its a bad idea to force western ideology to an eastern culture. it would be the same as muslims forcing their ideology on westerners.

do you think its a good or bad idea and why?

Yes, it is a joke. This quote from your article clearly gives it away, as well as the pictures.

"Immediately following the press conference, high-altitude bombers began to string Christmas lights throughout the greater-Baghdad area, and Wild Weasel electronic-warfare fighter jets initiated 24-hour air patrols to broadcast Bing Crosby's "White Christmas" over the nation. Armored columns struck out from all major allied firebases to erect a Christmas tree in the town square of every city, while foot soldiers placed fully lit, heavily guarded nativity scenes in front of every Iraqi mosque."

By the way, I'm not sure if you are new to the onion news or whatever, but the whole website is a giant string of fake new articles. Just a heads up.

Well it maybe a joke but . . . yes Christmas is been celebrated in Iraq as we speak . . .

Every US base in Iraq has Christmas as usual and the green zone has their Christmas celebration also.

So is actually some truth to the whole thing.

I believe that having so many US troops in Iraq right now, it makes the only place in the area beside Israel the second most celebrated holiday in the area that is no of Islam nature in a mostly Islamic nation.

That's the equivalent of saying that after the 9/11 attacks, New York could have used a month of observing Ramadan.

Well 9/11 was a terrorist attack (no good cause there), the Iraq war has a good purpose of bringing democracy to a former dictatorship. Merry Christmas to Iraq!

Well, that is truly a matter of perspective. But somehow I think most Iraqis would tell us where to stick our Christmas cheer, especially the dead ones.

Lol, I don't know what's funnier, the article or that it's so absurdly plausible.

Tell Santa what you want or go to hell - weed out the insurgents by who won't go to the show.

A free showing of Twas the Night on ice....Lol - isn't that a form of torture?
