Tottenham: Redknapp charged, Defoe might be aswell

Tottenham captain Jamie Redknapp is facing a three-match ban following unprecedented Football Association action after being charged with serious foul play over his horrific tackle on Everton's Tim Cahill.

And the FA could also come under pressure to apply the same criteria to Redknapp's Spurs' team-mate, the England striker Jermain Defoe, who committed just as bad a foul on David Weir in the same match at Goodison Park on Saturday.

Both players were only booked for their fouls - Redknapp for the fifth time this season which brings an automatic one-match suspension.

That caution would usually be sufficient for the FA to deem that referee Graham Poll had dealt with the issues, leaving further action unnecessary.

But the FA, who appear determined to ensure players who deserve red-card bans actually serve them, have pointed out their disciplinary code states: "Where a referee has reported ... a caution to a player but the association is satisfied the incident should have resulted in ....dismissal from the field of play, they may formulate a charge of misconduct ... under Rule E3."

He should have got a red card, very unlike Jamie but it was a terrible tackle. Didn't see Defoe's but he does make some bad ones, can be very high with the feet when he is tracking back.

Redknapp is not a malicious player but yeah it was a nasty tackle and should have walked.

I see the Defoe one aswell, the ball was going towards the touchline and a defender was shepparding it out. Along came Defoe and literally run and jumped two footed through the air. He did acutal get the ball but he caught a bit of the player aswell. Not enough to send him sprawling or anything, i'm sure he never went down. But it could have been a real bad tackle and could have done some real damage. Also the intent was there and it was a two footed tackle so he should have got sent off aswell..

They showed both the tackles again on Sky, they were doing an update on the potential ban. Defoe's was horrible.

Yeah i thought Defoes one was worse than Redknapps.. Defoe was going in like he really meant it and there was no need to as the ball was going out....

Tottenham Hotspur captain Jamie Redknapp has been handed a three-match ban after admitting serious foul play.

Redknapp was charged for an X-rated challenge on Everton midfielder Tim Cahill during Spurs' 1-0 win at Goodison Park on October 2.

Referee Graham Poll ruled at the time that it was worthy of only a yellow card, but after watching a video of the incident decided the challenge merited a dismissal, prompting the Football Association to act.

Despite maintaining that there was no intent Redknapp pleaded guilty to the charge and was handed the three-match suspension.

The FA ruled that the one-game ban Redknapp served under the five bookings rule against Portsmouth on October 18 will count as the first match of the suspension, while the Carling Cup tie against Bolton on Wednesday was the second.

The former England midfielder will complete the ban by sitting out Saturday's trip to Fulham.
