Manchester United have signed Dutch international goalkeeper Edwin van der Sar from Fulham for an undisclosed fee.

The 34-year-old has agreed a two-year deal and will join the club on 1 July, providing he passes a medical.

United have been looking for a new goalkeeper after releasing Roy Carroll at the end of May.

hehe.. you beat me to it on this one Dilly

this is a really good for Man utd, we all know the needed a keeper and with two being released, it reinforced our belives.

Cassilas, Buffon, Given, there names where being linked and they have snatched Van Der Sar who has a really good repuation and has always been outstanding for Fulham.

I think hes going to be first choice, Howard is there for links with the US.

I hope fulham get a good ammount for him, its just a few years ago they where signing players like this and they are now losing them, Saha has gone, Marlet, now the keeper and i think Malbranque will leave at some point now too. But... in fairness i think they did sign some keeper, its in another thread

So thats them got a good keeper, what position is next

Exactly. Van Der Sar is a great keeper, but at 34 approaching 35 he's no spring chicken. It's a problem position that's not going to go away, a bit like centre midfield with Keane who's well past it but he wont drop him, as well as Scholes. Plus Giggs on the left who is also past it, and Fergie does not really have an eye for buying talent.

I know that's a bold statement to make, but the only reason for their success is because of the blind luck of the unprecedented 5-6 top class players coming through their youth system!!! Beckham, Scholes, Giggs, The Neville brothers e.t.c. that he didn't spend one penny on, they were already within the club.

When has this ever happened again? When did it ever happen before? It just doesn't happen, they struck gold there, but now they're being exposed for what they really are.

Manchester United new boy Edwin van der Sar has spoken of his delight at landing a dream move to Old Trafford.

The experienced Holland international has been a long-term target of Sir Alex Ferguson and the Scottish tactician has now finally landed his man.

United have experienced difficulties in replacing former favourite Peter Schmeichel and van der Sar is the latest to step from the shadow of the big Dane.

Goal keepers don't mature untill 30+ except the odd few that are exceptional, so i would say he is in his prime and has 3 years ahead of him. Pretty good signing if you ask me..

yip. i think if they get 3 years out of him, its well worth it as they keepers they had aint on this guys level.

I think the one weakness Van Der Sar has is that he aint actaully that physcial for a keeper, hes really tall and all but hes lanky. I dunno how confident he would be in positions which he might come off worse
