Liverpool: 60,000 seater stadium go ahead?

Liverpool chief executive Rick Parry is hopeful that everything is now in place of the club's dream of a new stadium to become reality.

As Liverpool's squad arrived at Athens airport for Tuesday's Champions League clash with Olympiacos, Parry was greeted with a mobile phone message to tell him that the Stanley Park scheme had received the approval of Deputy Prime Minister John Prescott's office.

Parry admitted the original costs of the scheme had been overtaken by costs. The original plan was for an 80million project, with the stadium being built on Stanley Park next door to the club's current Anfield home. However, the costs are now reported to have spiralled to around 120m apparently one of the reasons that shareholder Steve Morgan's takeover plans were abandoned in August.

It is believed Morgan was concerned with the extra costs as well as the club's finances. The latest results are expected to show that Liverpool are running at a record loss.

The club believe the only way to bring in extra revenue and compete with the European giants is to build a new home.
