Brighton manager Mark McGhee is concerned the club's lack of funds will scupper his attempt to sign Alexis Nicolas on a permanent deal.
The Chelsea midfielder's three-month loan spell at Albion expires at the end of the month and McGhee admits the club risk losing the player.
He told the club's official website: "We're still negotiating with Alexis and his representative and we're trying hard to find a solution.
"It's very difficult. I don't have to go over the problems the club has. Anything that we give out is money that we haven't got."
