Bolton Wanderers: Fadiga released from hospital

Bolton midfielder Khalilou Fadiga has been released from hospital after collapsing on the pitch before the Carling Cup tie against Tottenham at the Reebok Stadium.

It is understood that the results of tests he took were fine.

A club spokesman confirmed: "Khalilou has been discharged from hospital and returned home."

Fadiga, who has a history of heart problems, fell to the ground suddenly in the warm-up and was carried off on a stretcher to the dressing room by anxious medics.

He came around in the treatment area before being ferried to hospital.

Fadiga arrived at Bolton last month and was given the all-clear by their medical staff following concerns over surgery in Belgium for an irregular heartbeat.

He signed a deal until the end of the season after spending two weeks training with the club following his release from Inter Milan.

Fadiga is yet to start a game and was due to be on the bench but now there will be concerns about his well-being despite the tests apparently being clear.

But Bolton told BBC Sport they did not know cardiologist Hugo Vanerman had operated on Fadiga, 29, who fainted before Wednesday's match against Spurs. Vanerman told Belga news agency: "We fitted a device to help the patient avoid sudden death if there is a severe disturbance to the heart's rhythm."

Bolton midfielder Khalilou Fadiga may be able to resume his career despite having an automatic defibrillator implanted to try and correct his heart problems.

Fadiga had the operation in Belgium on Friday after collapsing on the pitch 48 hours earlier before the Carling Cup game against Tottenham.

A cardiologist then voiced fears that the 29-year-old Senegal international might never play again.

However, there was a dramatic twist on Monday when Fadiga and his surgeon Dr Pedro Brugada hosted a news conference to try and set the record straight.

Fadiga's agent Charles Collymore told the Press Association: "Fitting the defibrillator has been done as a safety measure.

"Dr Brugada says there is a tennis player and a marathon runner with this device. It does not mean the end of Khalilou's career.

"There are sports people who have had similar procedures.

"The cardiologist was not authorised to make that statement. He has been carpeted as he is not Khalilou's surgeon and he did not know the case file."

Fadiga remains remarkably upbeat about the situation, and firmly believes he will be back playing again soon.

Trotters boss Sam Allardyce has assured him he will play him once doctors have given him the all clear, and the African says that he has been told he can resume playing.

fadiga's specilist Professor Marcello Chimienti has urged him to reconsider and let him quit football

''Fadiga should live his life quietly and give up playing football,'' urged Chimienti.

''It is extremely dangerous for him to want to continue playing while wearing a defibrillator.

''The machine is so delicate, if it gets hit by a ball during a match, or if the player falls onto his shoulder or takes a kick, it will stop functioning - and this will lead to his instant death.

''I would liken his situation to Marc-Vivien Foe. He should not be allowed to play football and even having another operation won't alter his problem one bit.''

i wonder what big sam's view on this is, if i was his manager i would say, i think its best if you retire. you had a good career and now is the time to leave it behind.

the proffeser guy is saying he could die instantly. him playing at the reebok and droping dead, if that was to happen just think of all the kids and family who go to games. that will stick with every1 forever

"Khalilou has an implantable defibrillator as part of his management. He is no risk to or from other players.

"In Professor Brugada's expert opinion, considering all the medical details of the case, Khalilou is now medically fit to play professional football.

"The player has decided to resume training with a view to playing first team football again.

"Bolton Wanderers, having taken several opinions, will support the player's decision and monitor his health very closely."

One minute he is quiting, next he still wants to play. If i was Bolton i would get him to hurry up and make his mund up.

they must be thinking, can he play or not, cos, they wont want him playing if he might drop down and suddenly die.
