Arsene Wenger is optimistic Arsenal defender Sol Campbell will not require an operation to remedy a nagging Achilles problem.

Campbell was first hampered by the injury after the European Championship but the problem flared up again after last week's controversial defeat to Manchester United.

The England international has been ruled out of Saturday's Premiership game against Southampton and will miss Tuesday's UEFA Champions League tussle with Panathinaikos.

The problem is also affecting his calf and Wenger is worried that his imposing centre half will need a spell on the sidelines.

Wenger, though, remains hopeful that he will not have to send the stopper for surgery as the injury is now in a slightly different position.

West Ham was going to buy Cygan before he went to Arsenal but we would pay 2.5 million for him but they went and spent 5 million on Repka lol!l

Campbell is a big loss if he is going to be out and they havn't got anyone nearly as good to replace him. Maybe his position is next on the shopping list for Wenger.

Arsenal defender Sol Campbell looks certain to miss England's friendly with Spain due to his Achilles injury.

Campbell was originally expected to be out for around two weeks with the complaint, but he now appears set for a further week on the sidelines at least.

The news will come as a blow to Gunners boss Arsene Wenger whose side looked decidely shaky at the back without Campbell's calming presence against Panathinaikos.

However, England coach Sven Goran Eriksson will also be affected by the loss as the former Tottenham stopper looks highly unlikely to be available for England's game with Spain in Madrid on November 17th.

As well as that date, Campbell will miss matches against Crystal Palace, Tottenham and West Brom in The Premiership, Everton in the Carling Cup and the crucial UEFA Champions League tie with PSV Eindhoven.

Yeah cygan scored a wicked header, the keeper had no chance. Was just in the wrong net..

campbell to return

Arsene Wenger has stated England international Sol Campbell is ready to make his Arsenal return.

The former Tottenham man has been unavailable during recent weeks with a calf injury, a time in which the Gunners' defence has leaked goals.

They need him back for sure, they have been struggling a bit lately in the league. They have been a bit lucky in some of the games to get a draw and should have lost.
