Newcastle have shelved their interest in trialist Cicero, while manager Graeme Souness has denied making moves for Chelsea pair Joe Cole and Glen
Johnson.
Portuguese teenager Cicero caught the eye of Newcastle's scouts recently and was brought over on trial from Sporting Braga.
The powerful 18-year-old made a positive impression on Newcastle's coaching team, prompting suggestions that a bid could be lodged in January.
Souness feels he does not have a pressing need for a striker and has sent Cicero back to Portugal.
However, with Souness taking a liking to the teenager's abilities, a move could be resurrected in the summer.
Two other players seemingly not on their way to St James' Park are Chelsea duo Cole and Johnson.
Reports had suggested midfielder Cole and full back Johnson had come under the microscope of Souness, which prompted suggestions the Scot had tested
Chelsea's resolve to keep the pair.
However, despite having a pressing need for new faces, Souness claims he has not contacted Chelsea about the duo.
