Portsmouth boss Harry Redknapp is ready to try and hijack Darren Anderton's move to Birmingham after accepting defeat in the race for Michael Carrick.
Anderton was released by Spurs at the end of last season and has been trying to find a new club this summer.
He appears to have convinced Blues boss Steve Bruce of his worth and is expected to be handed a one-year appearance related deal.
However, Redknapp is still keen to bolster his midfield options despite landing Aliou Cisse from Birmingham earlier in the week.
He thought he had managed to capture elegant midfielder Carrick from former club West Ham, but Arsenal's emergence in the race for his signature would seem to have scuppered the deal.
