West Brom boss Gary Megson faces renewed speculation on his fututre after Colchester substitute Ben May struck two minutes before the end of extra time to dump the Baggies out of the Carling Cup on Tuesday.

May poked home from close range to decide the tie after Albion's Geoff Horsfield had cancelled out Craig Fagan's opener - and it was the least the U's deserved.

It was the Baggies' seventh game of the season without victory but Megson shrugged off suggestions he was feeling the heat. He said: "As a manager you have to deal with it.

"I am disappointed with both the result and the manner in which the result came about. In the first half we did not compete with Colchester and we looked poor. In the second we got about them, scored at the right time and had a couple of chances but we did not take them.

It was in the papers the other say that Bryan Robson is being linked with the job. Bobby Robson was linked by the Sun as well, would be the fans choice being an ex-player and an absolute leg.

Bit harsh to sack Megson, he did a good job to get them back up and the league is very strong at the moment.

Yeah i thought he wasn't doing that bad a job.

Bobby Robson? I thought Real Madrid wanted him....

You laugh but they are still interested in bringing him in as a coach, with Del Bosque as the 'head coach'.

Yeah i know, what i meant was is he wouldn't be interested in West Brom with Real sniffing around....

I think he would prefer a crack at West Brom rather than stake his rep at Real. He would also have all the problems with the hardcore fans cause he managed Barca, plus it would mean moving to Spain and at his age I'd have thought he would prefer to be in England.

Yeah i guess so.

It could be a good move as they don't have that bad a side and he could keep them up...Would be a fitting way to end his managerial career...

Sack Sven and put him in charge of England while he grooms McClaren for the job.

I agree they should give Sven the boot.

At the moment it looks like Megson is staying put. I havn't seen any articles saying he is for the highjump yet.

Gary Megson's stormy four-year reign as West Bromwich Albion manager ended in predictable acrimony on Tuesday night when the club announced it had relieved him of his duties with immediate effect.

Albion chairman Jeremy Peace acted swiftly to end Megson's tenure at The Hawthorns after the Baggies boss informed him by letter that he would not sign a new contract in the summer.

The club insisted they regarded Megson's letter, the timing of which they branded as "extremely unhelpful", as a resignation.

In an official statement Albion said: "Gary Megson today informed the board of West Bromwich Albion by letter that he wishes to leave the club at the end of his current contract in approximately eight months' time on 30th June 2005.

"The club accepts this as a letter of resignation and the board believes it is now in the best interests of West Bromwich Albion that Gary Megson no longer remains in charge of team affairs.

"As such, he has been relieved of his duties while contractual matters are resolved."

Former West Bromwich Albion manager Gary Megson has told Sky Sports News he did not resign his post at The Hawthorns, as stated by the club.

The Midlands outfit accepted Megson's letter, which informed the club he would not be extending his contract, as his resignation.

However, the 45-year-old has claimed he did not offer to leave his job and was eager to see out the remainder of the season with The Baggies.

"I certainly didn't resign. In terms of being sacked, you'd have to ask other people that but I can categorically deny I resigned," said Megson to Sky Sports News.

"I wrote a memo to the chairman and the rest of the board yesterday just stating at the end of my contract on June 30 I wouldn't be staying at that."

Megson was surprised when he was informed by Albion chairman Jeremy Peace on Tuesday evening that he was relieved of his managerial duties.
