Premiership football star Lee Hughes was accused in court today of fleeing the scene of a fatal car accident to dodge a breath test because he been drinking before he got behind the wheel.

The allegation was made against the 28-year-old West Bromwich Albion striker on the first day of his trial at Coventry Crown Court, where he denies causing death by dangerous driving in his 100,000 sports car.

Hughes is accused of losing control of the powerful Mercedes coupe near his home in Meriden, Coventry, ploughing into an oncoming Renault, killing father-of-four Douglas Graham and severely injuring his wife, Maureen, and the driver.

West Brom striker Lee Hughes had driven "like a madman" moments before he allegedly caused a fatal accident in his 100,000 sports car, a jury heard on Tuesday.

Motorist Deborah Vallance claimed the 28-year-old climbed out of the wreckage of his Mercedes CL55 coupe near his home in Meriden, Coventry, and said: "I can't believe what has happened."

The 28-year-old forward denies causing death by dangerous driving but has admitted failing to stop after an accident and failing to report an accident.

Premiership footballer Lee Hughes has been found guilty of causing death by dangerous driving in his 100,000 sports car.

The 28-year-old West Bromwich Albion forward, of Meriden, West Midlands, was convicted at Coventry Crown Court at the end of a six-day trial.

Hughes ploughed his super-charged Mercedes sports coupe into another car near his home, killing a father-of-four who was travelling in the back, before fleeing the scene on foot.

The footballer bit his lip but showed no other signs of emotion when the verdict was delivered.

Lee Hughes' Premiership football career seemed to be over after he was jailed for six years for causing a fatal accident following a post-match drinking session.

Judge Christopher Hodson said he had no doubt that the 28-year-old West Brom forward, who is thought to have downed six whiskies, fled the scene of the crash because he knew he would fail a breath test.
