Boxing: Brewster, Meehan open to rematch, but Holyfield next

LAS VEGAS -- In another surprising Las Vegas ending, Lamon Brewster squeaked out a split decision against Australia's Kali Meehan over 12 rounds for the WBO heavyweight title on Saturday.

The crowd booed.

Meehan, who was trying to become his country's first heavyweight title-holder in 107 years, gave a spirited effort that fell short according to the judges in a Don King Promotions fight card held at the Mandalay Bay Resort and Casino. There were 9,128 in attendance.

The square-jawed fighter was a huge underdog against Brewster but hammered the title-holder from the third round on to the surprise of the fans who thought it would be an easy victory for the title-holder.

"A lot of people thought I don't belong here but I think I do," said Meehan (29-2, 23 KOs) graciously. "I'm happy I stayed in for 12 rounds."
