Boxing: 'Speedy' Gonzalez suffers first loss

In a battle of unbeaten junior welterweights, Demetrius Hopkins kept his "0" intact with a technical decision win over Al "Speedy" Gonzales at the DePaul Athletic Center in Chicago.

Scores were 69-64, 68-65, and 67-66 for Hopkins, who improves to 15-0-1 with 6 KOs. Gonzales, whose cut left eye forced a halt to the bout after the seventh round, drops to 14-1-1 with 7 KOs.

Another young prospect, Kendall Holt, saw his undefeated record shattered by Thomas Davis, who stopped the highly touted Duva Boxing fighter in the first round of the ESPN2 Friday Night Fights opener.

Holt falls to 15-1 with 11 KOs.

Demetrius Hopkins won the battle of the unbeaten fighters at the DePaul Athletic Center in Chicago on Friday night when he scored a stoppage win over Al 'Speedy' Gonzalez.

The ESPN2 televised bout ended prematurely when Gonzalez suffered a deep cut over the eye from an accidental head butt, forcing the fight to go to the cards. When the points were totted up, Hopkins was judged the winner by 67-66, 69-64 and 68-64.
