NASCAR: whats the point of nascar??/

I dont know that I can answer this easily or clearly.



But I can suggest that many people I meet that do not like it, admit to never having been at a race in person.

I used to be a huge football and baseball fan.

But now, the smells of the motors firing up, the smell of the tire smoke, the sounds that emit pure horesepower and can be felt inside your chest, watching the dance of the pit crew, and 43 cars maxed out on a superspeedway...

Just plain turn me on.

To see 150,000 fans in the stands...(unmatched by all sports in the US)

To feel the g's pressing in the turns,...

I could go on and on.

It is unlike any other organized sport I have ever experienced....action packed and continuous for hours.

nascar is one of those sports that you MUST see in person to fully appreciate. the start of indy car or f1 race is exciting but when the command is given at a nascar race THE WORLD ENDS....you can feel these cars, the crowd, the noise, the smell, the colors, being at a nascar race is 4 hours of pure adrenalin rush....oh yeah, and a beer or 3

toejam...you must have been to one..

and you do not overstate it either.


The prerace activities are cool too.

Back in 1995 I was at charlotte, and Humpy Wheeler set up the coolest pre race show too.


Two military attack helocopters flew in over the stands,...dropped a couple of jeeps, and a bunch of soldiers repelled out...they played war games, blew up a couple of mini-houses,...shot alot of blanks.


Then they reloaded everyhting back and winched all the equipment and personelle back into the copter, THAT HAD NEVER LANDED, but was very very close to the crowds.


Another time a B52 bomber did two low fly by's using afterburners., only a couple of hundred yards off the ground, and right over us.



But like you say... when the flag falls, nothing else matters. Nothing else is in your brain but the sights and sounds.


Anyone who doesnt understand it, MUST at least try it once. I know of only one person in my life that still didnt like it afterwards.

Are they really that exicting?

Your best bet for a good first race would be a charlotte race frontstretch seats, in the center or turn one or turn 4. Row 15 or higher if possible.


Someday spend a hundred bucks for a decent ticket, drive down or fly for the weekend,...and plan for a great experience.

Bad first race tracks to avoid...Indy, Sonoma, New Hampshire, ..

The best races for newbies are the mile and halfer's or bigger.

Charlotte has a race week where they have multiple races all week, goto watch the qualifying,...happy hour after the Busch race...and maybe even snag an autograph or two.

Watch the race on the speed channel, crank the tv up all the way with surround on, invite all your freinds, ...


And that does nothing to give you the real treat.

Track size...

Martinsville and Bristol are a half mile oval (therabouts)

Charlotte, texas, atlanta, chicago, vegas,...one and a half mile oval track....Daytona, Talladega over two miles oval.

there are races at loudon new hampshire, dover delaware (doesn't look right no matter how i spell it] and pocono pa, as well as watkins glen ny, those would be the closest to the ny area

is the best race out there Daytona?
