Chelios to make push for bobsledding team
October 9, 2004
Some locked-out NHL players have used the free time on their hands for various pursuits. Some are playing in Europe. Some are playing for a touring
circuit in Canada. Some are working on their golf games.
Chris Chelios? He's working on making the Olympic bobsledding team for Greece.
The Red Wings defenseman, who has played on three U.S. Olympic hockey teams, has talked about his desire to compete as a bobsledder for Greece in the
2006 Winter Games in Torino, Italy. To make that happen, Chelios, whose parents were born in Greece, will work out with top U.S. bobsledders Wednesday
at Lake Placid, N.Y.
"I am looking forward to getting the experience of learning the ropes of bobsledding," Chelios said. "It's a great opportunity to work with the United
States Bobsled and Skeleton Federation and their athletes. I hope this is the first stepping stone on my way to making it to the next Olympic
games."
Bobsledders scheduled to help Chelios in his quest are Waterford's Jean Racine, a driver who competed in the 2002 Olympics at Salt Lake City, and
brakeman Vonetta Flowers, a gold medalist in '02. Also on hand will be U.S. men's bobsled driver John Napier and U.S. Olympic coaches.
