The Cubs reached another offseason goal Wednesday by trading wayward relief pitcher Kyle Farnsworth, whose exit was prioritized just behind Sammy Sosa's. Now general manager Jim Hendry can concentrate on finding a closer.
Indications are Oakland Athletics right-hander Octavio Dotel, a hard-throwing reliever with closer experience in the National League Central, is on Hendry's short list. The Cubs dealt Farnsworth and a player to be named to the Detroit Tigers for three prospects. Combined with Sosa's trade to Baltimore, Hendry now has about $5 million to spend on a closer.
