Free agent infielder Ramon Martinez agreed Tuesday to a one-year contract with the Detroit Tigers.
Martinez hit .246 with three homers and 30 RBIs in 102 games for the Chicago Cubs last season, playing 73 games at shortstop, 24 at third base and six
at second base.
With the Tigers, he is expected to provide depth behind shortstop Carlos Guillen, third baseman Brandon Inge and second baseman Omar Infante.
"With Brandon at third, we needed a utility infielder to go along with Jason Smith in that role," Tigers president Dave Dombrowski said.
Martinez, 32, has a .268 average in seven seasons with San Francisco and Chicago.
