FBI may collect juveniles' DNA Bill challenged on privacy grounds
By Richard Willing
USA TODAY

WASHINGTON -- DNA profiles from hundreds of thousands of juvenile offenders and adults arrested but not convicted of crimes could be added to the FBI's national DNA crime-fighting program under a proposed law moving through Congress.

The law, if enacted, would be the greatest single expansion of the federal government's power to collect and use DNA since the FBI's national database was created in 1992. The FBI says its national DNA database holds genetic profiles from about 1.4 million adults convicted of state and federal crimes.

this better not pass.....

NO WAY!! PLEASE DONT LET THIS PASS (of course it will)... I get drug tested as a result of my probation and I signed the paper that says they are allowed to test my blood. I don't want to be profiled... I dont want to be in the database, I just want to be left alone...

Why do i have the feeling that 10 years from now, cops will carry around blood-testing kits in the back of their squad cars? Get pulled over for speeding - they collect your DNA? Public Intoxication? - they collect your DNA. And of course, they'll have to sample the DNA of every public school student to protect them from strangers and terrorists.

And although the article says "federal laws prevent these samples from being added to the national database and compared to unsolved crimes in other states", I doubt that will last long. Sigh. Privacy was good while it lasted.

If we are microchipped all they gotta do is pass some kind of scanner over you to know your dna.

Oh, don't worry. It probably already happens. You know when you go in for questioning, and they offer you a glass of water to get your fingerprints? Expect something like that to happen for DNA. We are SO screwed.

Is any organization brining up the legalities of DNA collection, like the ACLU?

I agree with DeusEx we are screwed whenever they decide they want control. I hate to draw on fiction but i think it was on CSi, but basically they gained DNA through the same method DeusEx mentioned. If they want it badly enough they will get it

That ain't fiction, Scarface. Police use that method all the time. It's one of those big reasons you never, ever accept a drink from a cop.

Well, this is just great. Police have the power to "trick" people into giving DNA sample.

www.komotv.com...

Is there really any way to keep your DNA from falling into the wrong hands?

Short answer- no.

There is a way, but in ivolves you being dead, and even then it's not that safe.
