Exhausted by a war with neighboring Eritrea that ended in 2000 and by election violence last year that saw nearly 200 citizens die at the hands of police, Ethiopians are suspicious of their leader, Prime Minister Meles Zenawi.
"Meles wants this war," said Abiye Fikre, a shopkeeper in the capital. "The problems are his own creation."
Adds butcher Abebe Belayaneh: "If Meles has his way, we'll make war all over the Horn."
As fighting intensified Friday between Somali Islamists and an Ethiopian intervention force, Western diplomats and experts warned that U.S. policy in the Horn of Africa - intended to curb Islamic radicalism - may not only be fueling this newest conflict, but also may be making it easier for al-Qaida to gain a foothold in the strategic region.
Fighting raged for a fourth day around Baidoa, the last bastion of Somalia's U.N.-recognized Transitional Federal Government, which is depending on Ethiopian troops for its survival. Both Islamists and the government claimed advances after what was described as a heavy artillery exchange.
The top Islamist official renewed his call for "jihad" against what he said was Ethiopian invaders, and there were reports of an armored column of Ethiopian tanks heading into central Somalia.

Ethiopia sent fighter jets into Somalia and bombed several towns Sunday in a dramatic attack on Somalia's powerful Islamic movement, and Ethiopia's prime minister said his country had been "forced to enter a war."
It was the first time Ethiopia acknowledged its troops were fighting in support of Somalia's U.N.-backed interim government even though witnesses had been reporting their presence for weeks in an escalating battle that threatens to engulf the Horn of Africa region.
Ethiopian Prime Minister Meles Zenawi went on television to announce that his country was at war with the Islamic movement that wants to rule neighboring Somalia by the Quran.
Mogadishu 24, Dec.06 ( Sh.M.Network) – At least 1,500 students have registered their names to take part in the war between Somalia’s Islamists and the Ethiopian troops.
The registration took place in Simad Institute in north of the capital, with a large crowd of people have formed queues to give their names.
Ismail Ali, one of the volunteers said, “I am registering myself to defend my country against the Ethiopian Christians. They have occupied my country and they refused to leave our country. By Allah, we will evict them forcefully”.

How long will it be until these students are called terrorists? I am guessing as soon as they pickup a weapon in order to defend their nation?
MOGADISHU, Somalia - Ethiopian troops seized towns throughout southern and central Somalia on Monday and bombed the international airport at Mogadishu, Somalia's capital, in a rapid escalation of a two-day-old offensive against Islamic fundamentalists who've controlled most of Somalia for the past six months.
The better-armed Ethiopians encountered no resistance from fighters of the fundamentalist Council of Islamic Courts at Baladweyne, a strategic town on the main road from Ethiopia into central Somalia, and later seized Aadado after fighting there. Ethiopian troops and Somali militiamen reportedly were advancing toward Jowhar, an Islamic fundamentalist stronghold 50 miles north of Mogadishu.
It's not clear, however, whether the Ethiopians intend to seize Jowhar or press their campaign to Mogadishu. Ethiopian officials said they've declared war on Somalia, and analysts said Ethiopian forces, equipped with tanks, heavy artillery and jet aircraft, would likely defeat the more lightly armed Islamic fighters in direct combat.

Well I sure called that now didn't I? I am curious to see if the Ethiopians will try and annex some territory as "spoils of war" later on in this campaign.
Now what about defending your country in the name of God all mighty? Does that warrant the terrorist label?

I don't like to see people die anymore than the next guy, but I think the US should stay the heck out of this one. We already have our hands so full of war that I don't think we could handle anymore. I say let them duke it out.
