Just listened to this song by tool and they nailed this issue spot on.
here are the lyrics. i agree with this song 100%

Eye on the TV
'cause tragedy thrills me
Whatever flavor
It happens to be

Like:
"Killed by the husband"
"Drowned by the ocean"
"Shot by his own son"
"She used the poison in his tea
[and / he] kissed [him / her] goodbye"
That's my kind of story
It's no fun til someone dies

Don't look me at like
I am a monster
Frown out your one face
But with the other
Stare like a junkie
Into the TV
Stare like a zombie
While the mother, holds her child
Watches him die
Hands to the sky cryin,
"Why, oh why?"

Cause I need to watch things die
From a distance
Vicariously, I
Live while the whole world dies
You all need it too - don't lie.

Why can't we just admit it?
Why can't we just admit it?
We won't give pause until the blood is flowin'
Neither the brave nor bold
Will write us the story so
We won't give pause until the blood is flowin'

I need to watch things die
From a good safe distance
Vicariously, I
Live while the whole world dies
You all feel the same so
Why can't we just admit it?

Blood like rain fallin' down
[Drown on grave and ground / ?? ]

Part vampire
Part warrior
Carnivore and voyeur
Stare at the
[transmittal / transmitter]
Sing to the death rattle

La, la, la, la, la, la, la-lie (x4)

Credulous at best
Your desire to believe in
Angels in the hearts of men.
But pull your head on out
[Your head please / ??] and give a listen
Shouldn't have to say it all again

The universe is hostile
So impersonal
Devour to survive
So it is, so it's always been ...

We all feed on tragedy
It's like blood to a vampire

Vicariously, I
Live while the whole world dies
Much better you than I.

i just hope people will get out of the trance... my sister is locked down.

I agree with your post and would add that those thoughts are actually causing us to have more violence in the world as we think violent thoughts we draw violence to ourselves. Example: Look at the middle east. Most of those folks do not want all this violence but those few who do are so maniac about it that they draw violence to themselves. It is a principal called resonance and if we observe carefully we can see it happening in all our lives. The good side is we can change our resonance as an individual and as a nation. Research shows it only takes about the square root of 1% of the total populace of an area to change the areas resonance. That means changing our thought patterns to peace patterns not violence patterns as the news and the media want us to thing about it so we will buy thier papers and books. Lets try a little educated thinking about how much better life can be and realize that killing and banging, and drugs are not solving the problem.

Certain aspects of the mind can be drawn towards negative and positive emotions. Music draws the mind to whatever is being heard. If the mind is drawn to negative emotions constantly then it is likely that the listeners mindset would become accustomed to emote more negativity than positivity. When a person's mindset becomes accustomed to being in a negative alignment that person becomes depressed.
