Hi,

I'm pretty much a n00b and can't find anywhere that lists the points system.

I have 3 questions:

1) How does the points system work - I have seen admins on here with over 1million points and know for a fact they haven't posted that amount in posts/threads.

Do you get more points for starting a new thread?

Is it simply 1 point per post and thats it? Are there any parts of the forum where you can increase your points?

2) If I get to the stage where I have over 5000 ats points, I can access the Really ATS forum section. Would I have trade all my points for access and start from scratch with no points just to get that 1 month access?

3) I have seen some members point table show they have a negative figure on their BTS points, how has this happened?

Hello and welcome to ATS by the way.
I am sure a moderator will jump in here very shortly but you can also check the user guidelines for your answers. BUT, since you are already reading this, I shall answer for you. You get more points for starting a thread and then people posting to your thread than you would simply by posting a response, which is 1 point.
Also, a moderator can recommend that you have started a great thread and can then award you extra point values, 500 etc...
Members have not posted 1 million threads, you are correct but point values are variable. You can get negative points by getting enough warnings for bad behavior basically. Also, after enough 1-liners, you will ge some negative points.

Hope this helps, Peace.....Mondo

Thanks for that Mondogiwa.

Edit - I had 46 points - I now have 52 :S

Can't see where I got them from!

I gonna keep a record of them and see what happens I think!

You trade in 5,000 posts for 1 month of access. So you would have 5,000 less points in total.

Are there any parts of the forum where you can increase your points?

You can try to win an ATS game, or just make good posts and you might get an applause. You can also start good threads where alot of people reply and you'll start getting alot of points.

I've heard that nothing super top secret is in there. It's just a place to escape the search engines. Still would probably be worth it though.

And another thing...

If you do decide to get access for the 5,000 points, make sure do it at the beginning of the month. Because the access isn't for 30 days. Once the months over you have the give more points to stay in. So if you get access on the 29th of the month, you'll only have a day of access. So try to do it early in a month.

3) I have seen some members point table show they have a negative figure on their BTS points, how has this happened?

Another way to have negative points is when you buy something at the ATS store, and click the "Take from combined points" botton it will take away BTS points even if you don't have them.

Say you had 200 ATS points and 50 BTS points. And you bought something for 300 points. It would take 150 away from each, leaving you with -100 BTS points.

Pretty sure thats right.

Strange, all the applauds I've had have given me 500 points. 3 of them were from Super Moderators if that makes any difference. I'm not complaining.

I see a lot of people have already gave a lot of insight on the questions, but just to clear up any confusion at all I'll answer each of these and then give you a lists of threads about different subjects on ATS.

1)
This thread was the same one mrwupy gave you, but I just took it out and added some updates to it.
Point awards system-(All thanks to Chissler)

Post = 1 Point
-On any thread in the ATS, BTS, PTS

Posts in one of Your Threads = 2 Points
-On any of your threads in ATS, BTS, PTS

Applause! = 250-1500 points
-Applauds are given by Moderators and Councilors (=250 points)
-FSME (Forum Subject Matter Expert) (=500 points)
-on PTS the Applauses are worth 1500

These are all given for a job well done and good etiquette in your writings or threads, also given for good and thoughtful replies.

Podcasts = 2500 Points
-your own design and communication of certain subject

Contests = Random Values (Usually a Few thousand)
-Found throughout ATS, BTS, PTS

Point Explained-

Points, is a great thing, and well desired by many members here on ATS, old and new. The point system was designed as a way to award members for their good work and smart thinking.

In the past the point system has gone through many changes and always for the better of ATS. Some might feel ATS is a place is for how many points you can get and how much stuff you can buy. It’s not really all that great. ATS is place for people to talk and learn really about anything.

-On ATS it points system has seemed to be a controlling factor in many of the member’s time here and sometimes goes too far. There is always questions concerning of how to get more points and so on.

The most true and best way to get points is not to worry about it and do your best in what you are good at, and everyone has something they are good at, especially here on ATS where anyone can fit in.

-Remember this one thing, try not to always post repeatedly over and over, you only receive 1 point in another thread and only two in your own, this also can be used as an offensive, you can get points taken away.

-On the bright side, try and come up with smart threads that can entangle the members here on ATS into a feeding frenzy of knowledge, on BTS you can easily try to invent ways to deny boredom on the General Chit Chat forum, here you can come up with as much crazy inventions of den boredom as possible. From good threads you might just a lot of replies and from that some points, so never give up on what your imagination can do.

So many members will do anything for points, all it takes for anyone truly is to do some research and learn about a topic, use good grammar and make sense, post a thread and there should always be a response.

-When making a good thread keep in mind to keep the readers thinking, in most of the forums here on ATS you must truly know what you are talking to make a good thread. There is always a good way of stirring up a discussion in a forum and it is easy to do so, but do this in all respect of all the members there, ask a simple question and wait for response, if you do not get a reply do not be bummed out and do not put yourself down. It takes time to learn how to truly become a good writer and a good researcher, here you can learn.

If you really want to gain points, you can try these two sections on ATS
ATSNN

-All you need here is a current event subject, or editorial you want to write, take your time and be true, submit this and there is a chance it could be allowed, when this is done you will receive a great amount of points and it’s not so bad.

Podcasts

-At Podcast central you can be a part of group of people who talk and discuss live about all types of situations and ideas, also you can Podcast random things and have fun, and talk about deep and smart conversation with your fellow friends on ATS. All you truly need is microphone and regular program that you can get for free anywhere on the net. This might be the most rewarding part of ATS, it gives you the most points for an active Podcast and also points to your replies from your podcast and so on.

2) The RATS section is straight up 5000 points, and 250 points every month to keep going, its a lot of points, but if you wanna get in that is that. The bummer is you will have to start all over again.

3) Basically the negative points come from either one of two things, a penalty for disobeying rules=
Rules-
click here- IMPORTANT: ATS Rules, Guidelines, Etiquette, and more...
click here- New Policies for Political Bickering on ATS

Terms & Conditions-
click here- Terms And Conditions Of Use

THE THINGS YOU BEST NOT DO page-
click here- Actions for general abuse and Terms and Conditions violations.

Or buying something from the ATS Store, that you can not afford, if you want to do it right, all you do is when the system asks you would you rather use all your points, only use the points you know you can afford from, or unless it will split the cost down the middle of the points of ATS, BTS & PTS, and most likely you will not have a lot of BTS points, so just watch that.

Hope this helps
