Plasma/LCD TV question

This may not be the best forum for this question but .....

I'm going to go HD with a plasma or LCD screen. My question is, do I need to buy an actual TV with a built in tuner, or can I just by a monitor if I connect it to my DVD player w/ a tuner, or my digital cable TV reciever?
