the rain from hades

I saw this some where. it is a shell that is fired up at an angle over a battlefeild. once it hits 200 feet above the ground it explodes and drops around 50, 5 foot long steel rods with weighted spear tips on one end out of the sky, subsequently impailing anything underneath it. they were said to penatrate into the ground 3 feet and could be used to clear out fox holes, thin ranks in a forested area or clear a minefeild. imagine this secene...you are running across an open feild and you hear a boom above you and you see a quick silver flash and you platoon leader is pinned to the ground with a rod through his chest.....sounds plausible to me
