Nazi Gold

So I heard that the last time they moved gold in to Ft Knox was around 1940ish when tentions between us and the Axis were realy high. Now the Nazis had sunk a few of our ships which was our justifcation for entering WW1. So why didnt we attack? A lot of the Nazi Gold is missing maybe it was given to the US as a bribe or gift to stay out of the war for X amount of time. We really could have used the gold. It was probally taken, sold in small amounts and used to finance the war effort.
