The man who has worked closest to the former communist-time secret files in Bulgaria for the last 25 years, Bozhidar Doychev, has been found dead in
his office. They say he "committed suicide" but a military investigation has been launched.
The chief of the "Archives and Secret Files" division in the National Intelligence Service was found dead in his office, but the news on his death
emerged a day later. The body of Bozhidar Doychev was discovered Wednesday evening in his office after his family went to his workplace to look for
him. London-based website Kafene.net broke the news first, quoting unnamed EC sources. According to preliminary information, Doychev has committed
suicide. Chief Prosecutor Boris Velchev was alerted of the suicide right after the body was discovered, and he had the military prosecutors launch an
investigation into the matter.

I wonder what this guy knew. And whether he committed suicide or was silenced...
Doychev may have tried to cover-up some of the information in the classified files, because according to the EC sources, Bulgaria was supposed to
start unsealing some of them.
The presidential office has not released any statement on the sudden death of the man who has worked closest to the former communist-time secret files
for the last 25 years.

The death of Bozhidar Doychev was announced with a two-day delay after he was found dead at his desk on Wednesday. The opposition was quick to turn on
the authorities, claiming the timing - just weeks before the files are released, was suspicious. Speculations flooded foreign media reports as well.
Officials insist that Doychev shot himself in the head for personal reasons.

I don't know if it's related or not, but Marcus Wolf died recently. He
was the former head of Stasi.
ok - wildly speculative conspiracist left feild theory
he was " suicided " because the archives he maintained contained damaging details on the use of toxins and assasination methods by KGB and soviet
era Warsaw Pact intelligence agiencies which - if released to the west would have prooven FSB complicity in the murder of anna Anna Politkovskaya, and
the attack on Alexander Litvinenko .
the bulgarians were up to thier eyeballs in a host of WP era scandals - the markoc assasination , the attempt on the popes life .
as chief archivist - this guy would have had the inside scoop on all of the dirty secrets .
was he about to talk , did he have a fit of concience , and need to be silenced ?
The Bulgarian intelligence archives is believed to contain information about the Pope John Paul II in 1981. Or maybe they just made that up to cover
up for a bigger story?
In a Cold War-style drama, the sudden death of the man in charge of a key Bulgarian secret police archive that was about to be declassified has
created a political uproar, NY Times and International Herald Tribune wrote Tuesday.
Bozhidar Doychev, 61, had served since 1991 as director of the National Intelligence Service archive, which is believed to contain information about
the 1981 shooting of Pope John Paul II and the assassination of the Bulgarian dissident Georgi Markov, as well as records on current officials who may
have worked for the secret police.
Many people believe that Doychev's death was somehow related to destruction of files on behalf of people who want their participation in the former
security services to remain hidden.

If he was trying to censor some info, and was killled because
of it, than that's actually good in my mind, however if it's the
other way around, well that's boviously very bad.
Bulgarian secret service - feared and admired world wide for its efficiency, tact and sheer brutality it wields within its operations...even the
soviets in the heydays trusted them to get the job done with minimal supervision....
If they want you dead, your dead, end of discussion.
The names of individuals who collaborated with the former secret services of Bulgaria will be published on the Internet, the Parliament decided
Thursday. The new law was passed at second reading and according to it the individuals' names will be published after they have been informed. They
will have the right to appeal the accusations before the Supreme Administrative Court. The individuals occupying public positions who have just a
single file in the archives of former communist service Durjavna Sigurnost will also be revealed by the secret files commission.
Sixteen years after the collapse of the regime, Bulgaria has remained the only country among former Soviet satellites in failing to reach consensus on
the issue of the secret archives.

The parliament voted to open the secret services archives. But not all of the files are released. Some of them are held back for "national security
reasons".
Another Bulgarian security employee has been found dead on the job. He apparently shot himself in the stomach for health reasons, according to a
suicide note they found in his pocket. They say this latest suicide is not related to the "suicide" of the Secret Files Archive Chief Bozhidar
Doychev in any way. The investigation into the case of Doychev is still under way.
The 49-year-old employee of the National Intelligence Service Ivan Rakov, who was found shot on Thursday morning, committed suicide for health
reasons. That has become clear after the police found a letter in his pocket that says nobody should be blamed for his death and he killed himself for
health reasons. The letter stated also he fell into depressions very often. A graphological analysis of the handwriting will be carried out in order
to identify whether the letter was written by Rakov, Sofia's Military Prosecutor Spas Iliev said at a press conference.
There are no data that the Wednesday suicide and the death of the chief of the "Archives and Secret Files" division Bozhidar Doychev at the service
are connected in any way, Spas Iliev said.
Doychev was found shot in his office at the end of November. The authorities' statement on his death was he committed suicide for personal reasons.
However, investigation into the case is still under way.
