Would the military call up the private mercenaries in the event of war?

This is an interesting question. Would the government call up the private security companies like Blackwater in the event of a nuclear detonation or war in the US?

This is based on the recent Jericho Episode, They had an encounter with a group called Ravenwood.

Would you obey them if they showed proper credentials or would that force you to challenge them to their authority?

I think I would resist. I consider these groups to be mercenaries and they would not have any Law Enforcment or Control by US Law. After all it is just a contract not an oath.

What do you think?

So mercenaries can't swear an oath of allegiance and be sworn in as a legal arm of the cops or the military? Can they be Deputized by a county sheriff or Marshall?

If it comes down to mercenaries as enforcement entities, then more than likely Marshal law has been declared and any resistance will get you a oneway trip to a detainment center or dead.

Let's pray it never comes to this.

Buford raises an incredibly interesting point. Mercinaries under the employ of the national guard or state/local police would arguably not be a violation of posse comitatus.

Would I obey? Depends entirely on the order.

If there's a riot in my city and the national guard hires a few honchos, and they tell me not to go where the looting is, I'll just stay home, clean my guns, and keep a sharp ear on the news.

If somebody wants me or any of my property out of my home against my will, wants to violate my civil rights in any way, or wants whatever else that I feel hurts me for someone else's unwarranted profit, then I don't care what the circumstance is or what his status is.

Be they cops, sheriffs, state troopers, feds, national guard, federal troops, mercs, or the Pope himself leading the entire Swiss Guard, with elephant cavalry just for good measure, I'm gonna jump, and they'd be wise to not be under me when I land.

Funny how there are no contingency plans to call up the American citizens who maintain the right to organize on thier own as a militia.

If I recall correctly this has already happen.

Blackwater participated during the Katrina aftermath.

I was witness to this, I was one of the officers from the NYPD who went to help out.

I believe that because of the presence of them, we were denied access to New Orleans from the start. I remember seeing the tracer fire at night.

Imagine if we had got in there, I might has shot one of them.

Who would you rather have to help you. A certified Law Enforcment Professional from an agency over 200 years old, or some former military guy who just came back from the war.

We are talk to think first to avoid conflict, and use minimal neccessary force.

They are grunts from the front lines.

In theory there are. I'll dig them up for you later if you like. It's not that they don't exist, just that for various political, logistical, and quite possibly conspiratorial reasons they are highly unlikely to be used.

The unorganized militia is a reasonable last hope when you need something to hurl at a Russian siege of Denver, but they're worth next to nothing in a riot or other disaster which results in lawlessness. When thousands of armed civilians taking desperate measures for desperate times are part of your problem, sending in a gaggle of armed civilians to keep the peace generally isn't a smart move.

Since even the US Army would not be permited to have police powers in teh event of a nuke attack on the US, then no, mercenaries (really, this is just a soldier with a better contract) would not have police power legally either.

As far as militias, many states still operate State Militias.

As far as unofficial militias, the whole idea behind them, their legitimacy, is that they are assembled from a section of the public, and operate within that section of the public. They'd be the power authorities in such a situation, not the federal military.

The national guard and the reserves? The citizen soildier? The very same ones who are going to fight foriegn wars. Who knows what the regular military is doing these days?

I think the regular military is in reserve and they are sending in the reserve and the guard instead.

I have not mentioned either.

The citizen soildier? The very same ones who are going to fight foriegn wars.

THe people fighting in foreign wars are not citizen-soldiers, they are professional soldiers. If there was a disaster, and a general state collapse in the US, then an entirely different set of people will rise up and act as local militias (not to say that any formerly professional soldiers won't also stand up).

I would say that the government is about to institute this policy due to the lack of available man power in the military. The people I talk to are against the draft and sign ups are really low.

I predict that there will be more to come on this issue in the future.

I will keep my eye on this new congress.

Let us hope that common sense prevails for the good of all.


We should see if any new bills are being introduced to start this off.

There's a war going on in Iraq. Contractors (a benign term for mercenaries) currently number upwards of 100,000 strong in that country as we speak.

Who knows what kind of idiotic moves this adminstration would make here at home if the sh** hit the fan. I do know this: if a patriotic armed resistance developed here in that event, BushCo. would show no mercy to them. They would kill and lock up as many as they had to to quell opposition. These cretins are wholly devoid of mercy and reason.

Correction: personnel serving in the US National Guard and Reserves ARE classified as citizen-soldiers.

Personnel serving in the Regular Army, Marines, Navy, Air Force and US Coast Guard are classified as "regulars".

Professional is a term used to describe regular (active duty) forces.
