Colossal hurricane-like storm seen on Saturn

Hmm Never before seen stuff, Big ships in the rings, what if this is all connected ? maby the first fase of a tereforming process, ? i wonder if is not a hurrcain but some kind machine to suck all the gas off the planet or some kinda machine that makes an atmosphere ? please post opions please !

Absolutely fascinating pictures of the storm. There is no indication of how deep into Saturn's atmosphere the thing goes, but it looks like it goes down quite a way from all the layering visible. It will be interesting to see what all the layers are made up of.

It is interesting, as is all exoclimatological newcomings.

I really wish the term "never been seen ebfore" was'nt used,
even if it's the case, look at how short a time we've even
been able to observe Saturn, than couple that with how even
shorter an amount of time we've had Cassini there to observe
the planet.

This may be a natural part of Saturns weather processes that
happens every set amount of years.

Hmm, I keep hearing this is the first hurricane-like system observed on another planet, but isn't Jupiter's Great Red Spot as hurricane-like as this?

If anyone knows the difference let me know...

my first reaction was "is that thing real?" then "w...t...f...is that?" lol its hard to believe that something like that exists. I would like to see a view a bit more zoomed out, like on the weather channel when you get to see like 50 miles around the storm lol. Asking for alot, I know.

Don't know how far out this is taken from, but it looks like
it's pretty far out.

thanks, thats alot better! but still I would have thought it would be cool to see the surface of the planet, then this big hurricane on it. to get an Idea of its size. I mean to be honest, right now it looks like a cool CD/Disk they just made up as a concept idea. especially the top right one lol. right bottom looks like a swirling blood stream or something. I dont know, I just wish I could see "Saturn Weather Channel" with the cool graphics and semi accurate depictions hoping to simulate what it would look like in reality... you know what I mean...the impossible lol.

Well, from what I know, Saturn may not have a surface in the way
that the Earth does, but rather has a liquid metal core.

Things do tend to look weird in other wavelengths of light.

Well, when we have as many weather satelites orbiting Saturn as
we do the Earth, you'll get your wish, won't be for quite some time
though.

This is the first time a clearly defined eye, with what appear to be ring wall clouds circling it has been seen. The great red spot does not seem to have a clearly defined eye with an associated ring wall of clouds. The lack of such structure in the great red spot may simply be due to the sheer size of the thing--about 40,000 to 50,000 kilometers wide. The storm on Saturn appears to only be about 8,000 kilometers wide. I find it interesting that the Saturnian storm remains locked in a fixed position on the planet, which is totally unlike a hurricane. If Saturn has a surface (which is doubtful), it should be pretty well scrubbed clean of everything directly under the storm.

whut up ATS - incidentaly, this is my first post. I have poured over this site for sometime, and finally decided to jump into conversation.

This storm fascinates me - and I am really suprised that there are so few comments here about the topic. Also noteworthy to me is the lack of available information about the progression of this storm. I see a news article on a few different media outlets about the sighting of the gigantic storm, and then *poof* ... no more data.

I saw the pictures, seemingly showing an "eye" formation - I saw the JPL animation, depicting the powerfull, stationary circulation... but not much else.

Surely there are people somewhere watching this storm to see what it does. Surely there have been things learned, observed, or hypothesized about this massive meteorlogical event. I could be simply missing it, or not Googling hard enough, but I have seen no further updates to this story since its debut.

I did do a bit of research on known Saturnian weather systems and patterns, and learned that the southern hemisphere of the planet has historicly been a hotbed of meteorlogical disturbances. There is somthing known as the "Dragon Storm" discovered by a Cassini flyby in 2005 and has the appearance of a dragon in the upper atmosphere. From time to time, it is said that this Dragon will erupt into upper-level disturbances...

Is this related to the massive storm currently spinning on Saturn? I simply cannot find enough data on the current storm to correlate it to any previous meteorological data.

I know that there is no conspiracy, threat, or Tom-Foolery involved with this topic - which seems to be the main focus of discussion on ATS - but I still find this topic to be of interest. Has anyone else come across any further information on this gigantic storm?

MAJOR cool. I have no idea about the John Lear connection, but just looking at and reading about that is very interesting. The universe is so BIG and we are so small ... and there is so much more out there to learn about! Thanks for the article.

Well your average news outlets don't really tend to pay that much attention to space related news in general. But also, Cassini has a rather elliptical orbit, so I don't know if it has even gone around Saturn again since November, when those images were taken. Or if it's flown past the southern region where the storm is. So updates are going to be slow at best.

well i guess i am showing my ignorance a little bit then - i did not realize that Cassini was on such an orbit... do we not have ground based observatories that can get a shot of it? What about hubble?

Looking at that orbital information in that link I posted, it does appear to have gone around Saturn a number of times since, but I just don't know if it went past the south pole.

As for ground based telescopes or even Hubble. They wouldn't be able to resolve as much detail as Cassini can. Hopefully they can get more pics of it some time soon though.

yeah, i'd like to see if that continent sized storm is still spinning.

Has anyone posted about the possibility that the incoming Comet ELEnin or Planet X might be responsible for this storm? Where is the comets current relation to Saturn? Does it align with our planet & Saturn during this storm? Just food for thought.

This is all quite natural with gas giants and doesn't require any crazy theories- just the standard boring ones of standard atmospheric physics I'm afraid. I have been following Saturn with a number of telescopes for five months since it emerged from conjunction with the Sun.

And just how does that happen hmmm? Some magical property of this alleged comet or mythical planet is making it's presence known by causing a storm on Saturn! Christ I've heard it all now lol!

No, the storms on Jupiter and Saturn are quite different from here- they are much larger and as there is no solid surface there, once they get started they can continue to go for many years (indeed many centuries as is the case for the Great Red Spot). try reading up a little bit before jumping to such wild theories first!
