am i completely off base to ask why the military is so slow to upgrade or replace whatever vehicle our soldiers are using?

IF the most common deadly risk is in the form of IEDs, we have to assume that all the risks are in the same form, and that no one drives a simple truck into such deadly known risks.

what about the Gavin M113 type tracked vehicles?
given the choice, i would and i bet the men and women in uniform would choose more armor and more gun power.

another website i read noted that the military has thousand of those things in storage.

does anyone think that a next war will NOT have massive use of IED type weapons? if it is killing so many our our people, it is going to be around again.

and this holds true no matter who is the President.

Maybe a reason why it is taking so long is that the US wants a "perfect" one that is ahead enough in technology for it will last longer than one made really quick.

A- if you're gonna build 100,000+ of something, you want to make sure it's gonna meet certain requirements/specs(why not faster implementation)

B- no vehicle including MBTs are IED proof. You can minimize their effectiveness, and increase crew protection, but there are tradeoffs
- what is the mission
- how many troops per vehicle
- how much room for gear and ammo
- ease of exit/entry
- range
- mobility

The more armor you add the fewer troops, gear, ammo, and vehicle range you have. Additionally, there is the cost factor. More armor drives up cost.

All these things have to be weighed(no pun intended) in whatever decision is made.

Whether or not the vehicle looks futuristic is immaterial. Does it work is the more important thing to worry about.

thank you SO much for your last point. It's so true. The Pentagon is so concerned about how things look anymore. We do NOT need some kind of alien-looking high-tech truck, as long as it does the job effectively and keeps our troops safe.
