I highly recommend travel to Malta. It has sun/surf, history, western standards of cleanliness, and English is the official language (along with
Maltese).
About 30% of the visitors to Malta are Germans, 30% British, 10% American, and the rest from various countries. During my trip, my wife and I seemed
to be the only Americans encountered, and the German contingent was way above 30%.
Those Germans may be clean and polite in their own country, but outside, the world is their toilet, they are pushy, and smoke everywhere, whether or
not smoking is prohibited.
Now before anyone mentions "Ugly Americans", I would say that I was complimented by both an Englishman and a German that I was "very polite" (in
spite of being an American, I guess).
My trip to Malta was 1/3 to 1/2 the expense of a comparable trip to Hawaii.
