300 Million & Growing, Can America Sustain?

Today, the population of the United States reached 300,000,000 citizens.

(CNN) -- The United States became a nation of 300 million people Tuesday morning, the U.S. Census Bureau estimates.

Fueled by an estimated net gain of one person every 11 seconds, America -- the world's third most populous country -- joined China and India with populations greater than 300 million.

The main reason is simple: Births outnumber deaths. According to the Census Bureau, a child is born every seven seconds, but a death occurs every 13 seconds.

But immigration also plays a role. The Census Bureau estimates that a migrant enters the country every 31 seconds.

America claimed 100 million people in 1915 but didn't reach 200 million until 1967. The 400 millionth person is likely to arrive in 2043, according to the Census Bureau.

It took over 100 years for America to reach 100 Million. It took them 52 years to reach 200 Million and only 39 years for them to reach 300 Million. How long can they sustain this rate of growth?

With the amount of resources that are used on a daily basis, does this rate have to level off or can it be handled?

Frankly, I do not see how it could sustain with our way of life. Serious changes are inevitable and with looking at this rate of growth, they are much closer than a lot of us may feel.

In the next 30 years, can America handle another 100 Million people?

I don't think it's that bad of a thing. As the country becomes more crowded, it will force voters and public officials to make more decisions for the well being of society and not the individual (or small minority).

Yes the country can handle another 100 million. Many of these people will be immigrants as people are having less and less children. It is up to us to invest in people.... make education a point and make college/technical institutes available to all. Otherwise we end up with 400 million unskilled dummies.

We share a strong sence of optimism.

There are a lot of negative aspects to this though. There is a large population of homelessness as it is in the United States, where is another 100 million people going to leave them? Obviously as the population grows, other aspects of the country will grow to accomodate. But it is the rate of increase that concerns me.
