9-11, How Easy Was It to Navigate

There are alot of theories around 9/11, but one I have not seen discussed much is how the hijackers navigated the planes to their intended targets?

Did air traffic control guide them (to a nearby airport)? Or did they use the instruments in the cockpit, if so how hard / easy is this?
