This is not an analogy, it happened. A lawyer came to our jail, his religion has him wearing a cerimonial dagger. Well, that's NOT going inside and the CO told him as much. The lawyer argued that it was his religious right. Guess what, he didn't get in until he removed the dagger.

A quick update on the veil saga.

George Glossop, a part-time immigration Judge asked Miss Shabnam Mughal a muslim lawyer to remove her veil so he could hear her properly, during the morning session.
But she refused and and the case was adjourned till afternoon.
After the court reconvened the judge had to ask Miss Mughal to repeat herself after failing to hear hows she spelled her name.
He asked her to remove her veil kindly to assist in communications, as it has happens in other cases.
Miss Mughal replied to the judge she is taking her leave.
She later insisted she would carry on wearing the veil as she believes she has a right to, due to her religious beliefs.

Philip Davies, Tory MP for Shipley, said it was “outrageous” that Miss Mughal had defied the judge’s order.

A tribunal ruled she was not discriminated against, but she plans to take her fight to Europe, funded by taxpayers’ money.

Soft touch britain again at it's best, what a waste of taxpayers money, and i have a feeling those European cronnies will come down in her favour.
How can people expect to bring their customs from othere country's and impose them within british society, it just beggers belief.

I dont know if you guys in america are having these problems, if you are let me know and let me know what you think about the subject.

Anyway that's my moan for now, for full storey visit

No I can't say wearing a veil for a drivers license picture would help to capture a photo picture of the person so of course she would have to take it off.

And I believe that the person who claimed that they were having trouble hearing her because of her veil is lying because the veil has holes in it at the mouth so you can hear the person clearly when they are speaking.

Again, I believe the excuse that they had trouble hearing her is just an excuse to take prejudice against her and her custom for being Muslim.

You obviously know nothing about veils then. There are no holes anywhere except the eyes, and some veils, even the eyes are covered by transparant material.

Reagrdless, the veil covered her face. People who are a bit hard of hearing read lips to help them communicate, as well as facial expressions. When you are taking to kids who are learning a foreign language, it is important that they be able to see the teacher speak the words, not just hear them. Have you ever learned a foreign language? I have. And one thing that was important was watching the teacher's face, how she formed the words with her mouth, as well as her facial expressions conveying certain meanings in words.

You automatically jump to a conclusion that has no basis. Wearing a veil interferes with her job. Her religon does not require a veil. Thus, there was no reason to wear it except personal choice. Personal choice is not a viable nor acceptable reason for doing something that is hindering your job. If she wants to wear a veil, fine. Let her find a career where personal communication, contact, and understanding are not essential.

Two points:

1) She was hired to do a job. If she can't or won't do what is required to do her job, she should be canned. PERIOD!

2) She should have thought about her religious/personal customs. BEFORE she took the job.

If she feels she cannot be Muslim without hiding completely under a sheet-ya know like the KKK does- she should move to a new job or country-I am sure Iran would love to have her.

Personally I am sick and tired of everyone in the world bending over backwards for the Muslims-join other countries societies and mix in or go to a nice all Muslim country like Iran (I would like to see what happens to her when she breaks laws there:lol

I thought of this thread the other day when I ordered Mexican food over the phone. The girl I spoke to (apparently a native English speaker with no accent) asked me a question I could not understand. I asked her to repeat it several times until I finally understood...

Her question? "Do you want onions on that"?

It reminded me of how important it is to sighted people that we see the person's mouth. Sure, listening over the phone to my sister, I understand her, but with a stranger, there's a much larger chance that I'm going to miss something. And to learn another language over the phone would be nearly impossible!

I agree with some of the posters on this one. If she cannot perform her job efficiently due to the veil then she should find a job where it will not be considered an obstacle. There are several other jobs she could find where it would not be a problem. So I agree with the actions taken to suspend her and find a better replacement.

Whoever interviewed her for the job initially, should have asked her about her veil and how she feels about taking it off BEFORE hiring her. I'm sure she wore the veil to her job insterview and that the interviewer must have had some trouble hearing her.

I believe in religous tolerance, but she is taking it to the extreme. The children's education is more important than her insistence on wearing the veil, which is not required by her religion.

Actually, forestlady, she DIDN'T wear the veil to the interview. That's the big hypocricy here as there was a man interviewing her!
