For some reason I have seen numerous such posts here, and I am a new member so it must have happened in a short perioid of time as well.

If somebody says that he is a skeptic and only believes when enough evidence is presented to him/her, it pretty much states that such a person doesn't exacly believe in aliens.

A lot can be read between the lines. Its because people have different ways to express their ideas and also every single one of us has a different set of consciously known words.

Being skeptic has nothing to do with not believing. As i wrote in my previous post, a skeptic / debunker doesn't believe in visiting aliens just because of a single light in the sky.

You could still debunk thousands of videos even after seeing an ufo with your own eyes.

You are saying that I'm a skeptic for not believing in santa claus, because I can't prove to you that he doesn't exist. If that is your case, the whole OP is based on wrong statistics..

I think it's becuase younger generations these days who were born in the late 70's and up are more likely to believe since we've been conditioned from birth to believe in this stuff due to hollywood movies, etc. Older generations take a bit more time to be re-conditioned to believe in the UFO/E.T. phenomenon.

Too true. I have twice seen a UFO, and twice seen what can best be described as a ghost. Now, did I see an extraterrestrial space-craft or the spirit of a deceased person? Who knows. I have no evidence pointing towards any sort of conclusion. So each encounter goes down as unexplained. And despite what I have seen, I am still skeptical.

I think you are under the mistaken assumption that not believing "UFOs are piloted by extraterrestrials from beyond the Sun" equates a belief we are alone in the universe.*

There is no written law that there has to be life elsewhere in the universe. In fact we have no idea if there is life, intelligent or otherwise, anywhere but on Earth. And so far to the best of our knowledge, with what facts we have, it's not looking good for life being Out There. Think about it, we have eight other planets and 240 known moons, yet life only exists on Earth. For what evidence we have, life seems to be the exception, not the rule. If you base your belief on the evidence available, it is very rational conclusion and not in the least bit dumb or cowardly to believe we are alone in the universe.

For the record, I do believe there is life elsewhere. But it is just that, a belief. I, nor anyone else, has proof we are not alone. Therefore, we cannot claim it is stupid or illogical for one to believe we not alone. Looking at the evidence available, it is just as illogical to say we aren't.

*If I am wrong about the assumption, accept my apologies.

SaviorComplex --

You beat me to it, but I think this point is worth reinforcing...

I think most ATS members (and many Americans) DO believe in extraterrestial life (I do) because ATS members are usually well-educated in the sciences. One just needs to understand the size of the universe to know that it is highly improbable that we are alone in it.

HOWEVER -- just because we believe in extraterrestial life does not mean we believe in ET's visiting us in spaceships..those two ideas are quite different.

That poll said 60% of Americans believed in ET's, NOT the ET visitation of Earth. That's an important distinction that the OP seems to have missed.

Just because the universe is infinite, it doesn't necessarily mean its teaming with any life at all, nor does it mean aliens are visiting our planet.

And just because a survey was done in America we should all believe we're not alone without question? As if.

I personally think a lot of people believe they are here or anywhere, so they can have some tangible meaning in their lives. Even without one iota of proof.

UFOs in the sky, aren't proof of the existence of aliens you know.

That may well be, and I'm ready to accept such fact.

However, what law do you think this is?

Tds = du - Pdv

hm?

Here's a hint:

where T is Temperature, s is entropy, u is available energy, p is pressure, and v is volume. Each d is the calculus equivalent of delta, so du means more or less XX.

What's the XX?

Looks kind of like the reverse process of the First Law of Thermodynamics but I thought that it was du=Tds-Pdv, du representing stored energy in a system? Been awhile - school me....

Unless you are attempting to gauge some intellect here, I need help in understanding the relevance of this here. Color me a bit confused....

I think the majority of the world's population want to believe and want proof of aliens.

It would put our minds at ease - for both religious and non-religious people. It would show there's more to life than just being a random chemical accident or a small insigificant species in this vast universe created by a supreme being.

Great post and info...good to know I'm in the majority now. Now I have a statistic to shove in the non-believers face...keep up the good work.

Its the second law of thermodynamics in propably the simplest way to represent it. du is, i think, a change in energy, because it reads delta u

I had no particular point in this, except that there may well be lots of people here who do know basics about physics, but know it in philosophical sense only. It helps a lot, and I don't know everything in math either, but an ability to explain in words does not equal ability to explain with math.

Ahh, I get ya. And I agree to a certain point. I never took any post high school physics but have on occasion spent much personal time in text books teaching myself the rudiments of the field when having a hard time understanding a problem, sometimes learning more than I expected to, sometimes confusing myself more.

Oh, and I have stayed in a Holiday Inn Express before....

None believers are not dumb just skeptical about and this shows intelligence. Being gulible and believing every thing you are told scientist makes you more stupid. The equation that show that there are lots planets with life in them is greatly flawed. Humans still dont have a full understanding of how or why life developed on earth so how can this equation be right, when the most important part of it is not precise science.

Too many stupid people out there dont understand that a theory is not fact.
A theory is just a proposal backed with reasonable scientific knowledge till
there is better undersatnding of the subject. Theories come and go they are not fact. The chances of finding life in the universe is high but it is still just a chance. Open your mind to accept the possibilty that there might not be life in the universe other than earth. Until there is proof of other life then there is no life and is the smart way to see things.

Drake's equation is actually pretty much perfect way to statistically tell how many civilizations exists in the universe. The problem is that we don't really have a clue about what values those variables actually contain. We can just quess, and today all that we do know are based on statistics about number of planets orbiting other stars.

Additionally, we know very little details about those planets..

So, yea, that equation currently tells us nothing, but is a funny toy to play with a few times..

For some hard hitting evidence for the existence of aliens......

When people go into outer space, the bacteria makes more bacteria and that bacteria makes more and etc, when you come back to earth that new bacteria becomes alien to this earth effectively, so right there you've got aliens......scientific fact.........

Owned......aliens exist..............................

Those bacteria aren't aliens, since they came from Earth originally, they do not fit the definition of alien.

And for future reference, an elipsis ("...") is only three periods, not four, five, or several dozen.
