Well, here's one for the Weird Science textbook.
Apparently the Department of Energy is helping patent a process by which they can clone bioglue.
In particular, a liquid adhesive composed from the shellfish mussels.
When you read the patent, it makes sense, and it's pretty amazing. One of those, why didn't I think of that first, inventions. Apparently, the
protein stuff used by mussels to adhere to thinks like peers and ship hulls makes a really good glue. One that can bond to glass and metal and teflon
to name a few substances.
The problem is that it takes a hell of a lot of mussels to make an ounce, something like 1,000 mussels.
So DOE is
patenting a process by which they can mass produce this glue through cloning.
I guess it beats a bunch of Dolly the Sheep.
