The so-called "Voter ID" bill, aimed at stamping out voter fraud, would require voters in federal elections to provide picture identification by 2008 and provide proof of U.S. citizenship by 2010. It was among the recommendations made last year by the bipartisan Commission on Federal Election Reform, headed by former President Jimmy Carter, a Democrat, and former Secretary of State James A. Baker III, a Republican.

But Democrats, siding with groups that work on behalf of minorities and illegal aliens, called the bill a "modern-day poll tax" and said it would place an insurmountable burden on voters and infringe upon their voting rights.

Why would the dems not want people to show there are here legally to vote?

What voting rights of illegal aliens are infringed upon?

How would the voting rights of minorities be infringed upon?

Is it really that difficult for someone to show ID?

Why would Democrats not want people to show ID in order to vote?

The answer is desperation!

They know who their voter base is... poor, uneducated, illegals, criminals, and terrorists.

These people might have a hard time getting an ID card, and are more likely to vote for Democrats. The poor and uneducated are really the only legitimate voters in this group. In Louisiana, getting an ID card costs nothing, yes that's right $0, and as for the uneducated, if your are too stupid to get an ID card, then they are better off not voting in the first place.

I might get some slack for believing terrorists would vote for Democrats, but if they had a choice, I am convinced they wouldn't vote for Republicans!

How about this?

I feel presenting an ID to buy a firearm violates my 2nd Amendment right to bear arms. Let's see how many Democrats jump aboard on this one!

Just another reason I'm sick of both sides.

I honestly agree requiring photo I.D. and proof of citizenship
should be required, especially in the South-West states and
extreme South-East states like Florida.

Does that make me a Rpublican?
Absolutely not, it also does'nt make me a democrat either.

Its pretty sad, but let's not operate under the assumption that it's a purely democratic phenomenon.

I did some phone polling for Scott Matheson Jr's gubernatorial campaign in Utah. We were calling registered Republicans to see how many votes we were likely to gain from the other side. I made over 1,000 calls and out of every hundred I would usually find between 1 and 3 who had a birthdate that would make them between 90 and 110- none of them had valid phone numbers.

The Democrats want to preserve the opportunity for felons and illegals to vote on their side, and of course keep their own method of fraud working, but the Republicans are using the same loophole for their own fraud.

They're willing to close it because they won't be giving up touch-screens without paper trails. I believe that if we are ever going to be truly confident that our voice has been heard, it is going to be brought about through the initiative process, not by a partisan congress.

It is a bit wild to claim Democrats are doing this to keep terrorists voting for them. Is it not more likely that their voter base is from the Middle Class and down, with very few people in the Upper Class? ID is not always open for everyone and just because someone is of legal age to vote does not mean they'll have it.

Why should their rights to vote be removed because they do not have photo ID?

It is illegal to open a bank account of any type in the United States without TWO forms of identification. The same is true of Postal accounts such as a PO Box.

Voting stations should be no different. It would not eliminate all fraud, but it would make it more difficult. The idea that voter rights would be restricted doesn't ring true. Georgia was planning on making the voter ID cards available for free at the county elections office. This could have been done everywhere.

E-bay, $10 to get a fake ID.

Really, it won't stop fraud at all.

This is really an oxymoron.

Hypocrites is what Republicans are. They rig the elections, then make demands on voter id's like it makes any difference at all.

What an idiot nation this is now.

Why should my rights to buy alcohol, walk into a casino, buy a lottery ticket or purchase a firearm be removed because I don't have a photo ID?
