Military Coup in Thailand, page 1

Last night, on the 19th September, a military coup took place in Thailand. Army Commander-in-Chief Lieutenant General Sonthi Boonyaratglin sent his forces into the streets of Bangkok and announced that martial law was going to be enforced, while a 'Council of Administrative Reform' took control.

He says the coup was necessary because Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra's government has divided the country and corruption is rampant.

The coup's instigators add the seizure of power is temporary and controls will be returned to the people soon.

Earlier, Sondhi's troops circled the Prime Minister's offices with tanks, seizing control of television stations.

I just thought that this is very interesting, as I am due to go over to that country in a month or so.

Although they say "power . . . will be returned to the people soon", what are the chances of that happening anytime in the near future?

Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra only a few days ago said:

"I've never said that there was any movement suggestive of a coup plan. From as far as I know, there's no such movement for the time being."

And then as soon as he's in New York for a U.N. meeting, what happens?

This is just one of many coup 'd'etat's in the nations history. 1932, 1976, 1981, 1991, and probably one or two more that I cannot find right now.

I hope this all blows over and I'm allowed in.
