What is that? A rare isotope accelerator? Sounds sexy.

And it costs $1.1 billion. Ah, the government and their toys.

Rare isotope research encompasses producing and then studying rare isotopes that may have existed on earth at its origin but have long since decayed, taking their information about the origin of the elements—and the universe—with them. Producing isotopes that no longer exist naturally on earth provides nuclear scientists with the opportunity to explore the beginnings of matter and, ultimately, life.

It sounds like a way to figure out how life started, and what was going on during the formation of the Earth.
