Grandfather

So I just found out that my grandfather is a mason to the 32nd. My question is that, what exactly does that mean? I've only researched a little, and was hoping that anyone here would be able to elaborate. He told me to just keep researching.

That degree and all degrees above third, are honorary only, and is just representative of what he put into the fraternity. For example, commandery which is also called templar degrees, are different as there are York and Scottish degrees.

It might help if you knew what chapter he advanced in, but both are two branches of the same tree. Only one side has more branches than the other, even though they both are equal.

Well, that's not exactly true. The degrees of any of the rites are actual, not honorary, but they only have bearing within that rite, not in Freemasonry as a whole.
