Basically a router is a traffic cop for computer data. It helps multiple networks, computers talk to each other. You can't have a LAN party without one. Well, technically you could, but that's another story. People often use these to share Internet connections with other members in their house. Probably what you're thinking of.

Read more here (Click me, I'm a link). As far as purchasing a router you can find them at any electronic store, or even at Walmart for that matter.

In my opinion a router would rather stop you from "entering" someone else's computer. I guess if you know what you're doing you can enter a network through a router, but keep in mind that if you know what you're doing you can enter a network through any weak point. But in short, a router is NOT an easy target for a hack.

What is the best program to enter someone's computer? Are you talking about hacking? You know that's illegal, right?

Let's pretend that you're not referring to the illegal part... There are several ways and/or programs to "enter" someone's computer. It depends on what you mean with "enter". Do you want access to his/her files? Do you want to connect to the computer to play a game? Do you want to take control over a computer?

The best and easiest way to "enter" a computer is with Remote Desktop. A tool that comes standard with Windows XP (Professional?), which you'll find under Start > Accessories > Communications. You'll need to know the access point of the computer (IP address or Computer Name), you need to be on the same network as the computer (LAN or Internet), the remote desktop must be enabled on the target computer and you need a valid login. So, you see, if you want to do it "illegitimately" it's going to be hard.

There's a similar program called PC Anywhere, although I haven't seen that around for quite some time, and you need to install "server side" software on the target PC as well.

I will not hack illegaly hehe, I want to download some files from my cousant comp but over Remote Desktop it is going very slow. What about sub7? How to make server for antivirus not known as virus?

I'll strongly advice against using backdoor programs such as Sub7. They have a nasty way of turning against you.

Some Anti-Virus programs allow you to ignore certain files, but that depends on your software, and you'll have to figure that one out for yourself. Most probably you'll find some choices you can make after a file has been quarantined, like "Delete", "Restore and Ignore in the future", etc.

My best suggestion for you is to get an Ethernet crossover cable. They're cheap and easy to set-up. (That is if you both have network cards.)

yeah I know...
I use Remote Desktop over Internet, but I can only connect on his computer, why?

I'm not sure I understand the question. What do you mean you can only connect on his computer?

If you have his IP address you can
a. Set up a Virtual Network. The difficulty of this will depend on your computer skills, but there should be some easy step-by-step walkthroughs on the Internet.
b. You cousin can install an IIS (Internet Information Services). This is a bit more difficult - not to install but to keep under control, because this will open his computer up for all kinds of attacks and malicious cybermonsters. I do NOT advice this option!
c. Let him share the folder containing the files, or us webshare. (Look at the properties of a folder. You'll see "sharing" and "Websharing".) You should then be able to browse with your Windows Explorer to his address (or use Internet Explorer).

Or you can
d. Get broadband.
e. Use a Free Fileshare service such as Rapidshare. This means your cousin will have to upload the files to the service, give the link to you, where you can download it again.
f. Go visit your cousin...

Sorry if my answers are a bit vague, but the set-up of any of these services may be complicated at times. So if there's a certain option you'd like to try, we can try and walk you through it, step by step, if you can't find any decent walkthroughs on the Internet.

That's because of one or more of the reasons above.
You can't reach the certain computer via the network you're on (Like the Internet).
OR
They don't have Remote Desktop enabled or Installed.
OR
You don't have access.
OR
A firewall/router/gateway is stopping you from using the service.
