Time to drop the 'Katrina' Forum?

I know some people died and it exposed some racial / societal issues but is a separate forum for Katrina still justified? (was it ever?)

It only affected one country (as opposed to, oh the Tsumani for example).

To date it has only managed to rack up a measly 600-odd threads.

Surely this could be incorporated into 'US politics' or some other US forum?

First off, I am not speaking as a person from New Orleans, I'm speaking simply as a member.

Why get rid of it? It's a valid forum. There is tons of information and tons of people's work involved. Not to mention that there are many valid conspiracy theories surrounding the issues involved, and still growing in numbers. It seems like it would make sense to keep it, I mean, what really does it hurt? I know that people still use it as a reference for information, so why remove it?

Maybe it's not all about the number of threads, as much as it is about the quality and purpose of threads in this case. There were many quality posts there, off the top of my head, I can name Valhall's post on "I just got back from a FEMA detainment camp" which many people have brought up to me that don't even get into conspiracy theories. Point is, it made these people think, in turn it made them question, and that alone is a great service.

Did you know that if you Google "Katrina Government Conspiracy", that #4 on the list is ATS? I think that is pretty good, and also lends a helping hand to exposure and growth for the site.

Also the three sites listed above us on Google are absolute crap!

Actually it would be great if some of the folks from New Orleans would actually get on here and let people know how bad things are down there.

Some of the housing for the poor was never even touched inside by the floods but they are not allowed back in, their homes are boarded up and they are not allowed back in though they want to come home. These homes are prime real estate near the business district, and these people want to come back to their homes but their not allowed in their apartments though there is no damage.

Also according to a film by Greg Palast, about Katrina there is a lot more going on than most people are aware of, the film was being shown on Link tv if anyone wants to watch it, if anyone has a link to watch it online please post it. I think it should stay. And Goose has a good point too. I know we have ATS members that live there, or did at one time.

In fact, his quote reminded me that new information about the 17th street levy breach is still coming out.

Like this for instance. Did you know that the actual 17th st. breach was filmed as it broke? Did you know that water was not over the top of the wall? Did you know that portion of the levy was leaking for months before Katrina?

What I will say next will probably completely throw you. Katrina saved probably over 50,000 lives.

That levee was doomed. If it had failed without notice, the death toll would have been measured in tens of thousands. There would be no evacuation, no preparation, no Feds at all. (such that they were anyway) no Coast Guard in choppers etc.

I think it is still a valid forum. Discussion is still taking place and it was only just a few days ago that news websites were carrying articles of George Bush discussing the Katrina disaster and failed relief efforts.

It also still carries validity in that the forum (can) carries discussion of ATS-related conspiracy oriented topics.

(Please take note I am not being anti-Bush, pro-USA, whatever the cynics will throw at my statement.)

I'd say that new topics on Katrina could easily be rolled into the "Other Current Events" Forum without any disruption.

I think that it is a valid forum that does need it's only space for the simple fact that the event/s that lead up to, during and after are very multi-faceted. Some believe that the storm was purposely caused usng HAARP. Some look at the fact that the city was majority black which caused a slow response. What about those that believe that the government knew beforehand but didn't do anything because they knew the remaining property would basically be theirs for the taking. All of these theories would be better suited in one forum dedicated to Katrina instead of scattered in other topics.

I don't think it's time yet to get rid of that forum. There's still plenty to talk about Katrina and this year's hurricane season isn't over yet, so there's still a possibility something like Katrina could happen again soon, expanding the scope of the forum.
