Try switching to Electronic Engineering or Information Technology...Anyone who can design, repair or program computers is in big demand.

...At least, in any country that really counts for anything...

Unfortunately for me, I'm still working on my EE degree. That still gives me enough understanding to be able to work on the hardware, even if I'm not up to speed on *designing* new gear.

The next tough part would be able to research a decent place to live (presuming that such a place still exists) & being able to afford the move.

If you can live there, Midnight-D, they can tax you there.
And if they can't: they'll tax you if you ever go back.
Britain has a quaint device called Death duties (inheritance taxes) and they can even tax you after you're dead.

I'm still waiting for these issues to be adderessed in mainstream election-covering: there's a big bomb there and the counter's close to zero. Last week, the euro went briefly above the dollar and US unemployment (i.e. actually registered for benefits) nudged 6%.
It is getting closer: and that's not Estragon the Apocalyptical - that's basic Econs 101.

As I've mentioned before -and any students of the 1930's can confirm this for himself/herself - poverty limits individual freedom in ways that law-makers can only dream of.

I've mentioned it; in my home state, NY City is near 10% unemployment. And that quote about poverty as a civil liberties control mechanism is spot on.

Id like the kids of my country to be well educated, and I would to drive on a good road with no pot-holes. I want a publicly funded healthcare system, and I don't want a #ing space programme. I want to live in a country where you can't buy guns at the #ing supermrket. I also want to live in a country that will let me smoke and drink when I am allowed to vote. I'll take Europe any day of the week thanks very much.

Of course, when you are working, gov will take almost 55% from your income,and I don't speak about others taxes, like VAT, local taxes and so on.....

Taxation is one of the reasons I don't vote for the Dems - they love to tax you to death - we also have a death tax. Didn't Reagans tax cut triple government revenue? I don't think you have to tax the hell out of everyone to provide decent public services.

Yup, Bob, Reagan's tax cuts increased tax revenue substantially as it created a larger tax base; more jobs=more tax payers.
All that money plus money not yet earned, however, went to beating the Soviet Union in the Cold War. Now, we tax-payers are still paying money out to keep Russia stable.
In some strange way I miss the Soviet Union. It's hard to explain.

To a very large extent, tax-payers throughout the West are effectively paying off old debts; they are not financing the building of a better future.

I think Ultra-Phoenix got it right.If you want government controled healthcare you have to go to the docters they tell you to.Then of course public housing would be next.Then they can tell you where to live.So for people that want to live like China might be the best place for them.Where by the way,you can't by guns,but the government has plenty.

Socialized medicine would probably end up like a really, really bad HMO health plan - having to go to certain doctors, needing to get referrals after referral, etc, etc. I prefer my health care just the way it is.

I had to take a private health plan for my familly and myself, because if we have to go to hospital, the bill will be heavy !!! This so-called social security will pay a few, and the rest, I'll have to take it in my wallet !!!

"Social security" was a dream and we're watching its death-throes. In Britain there still is good free treatment for all but the waiting lists are so long, the doctors and nurses so demoralised that if you want anything non-life-threatening done, and don't want to wait years, you have to "go private" as we say.
It's much the same if you're a city-dweller and you want good schools.
They must have been mad when they thought of it ( much more likely they were deceptive, self-seeking socialists): better health-care means longer lives means more and more non-earning patients.
Anything offered "free" will invariably be abused and "universal" systems mean that it's only really free to people who're too bloody idle to work and contribute.
Whatever has possessed America to follow Western Europe down this road to disaster with the expansion of Medicare and the rest is quite beyond me.
There's little doubt that the tacit consent of government to massive privatisation represents their rather feeble and very naive hope that the problem will "just go away".
It will not. This liberal utopianism is incompatible with market economies
