God and The Deep

In Genesis, in the Chapter 1, there is a very interesting qoute, now assuming that this is a text that is truthful and what is said is the truth, what is the deep they speak of.

"Now the earth was formless and empty. Darkness was on the surface of the deep. God's Spirit was hovering over the surface of the waters."

The deep, what is it, note that there is a clear seperation between it and the water, because in the next phrase it says, and gods spirit hovered over the waters. What is this deep they speak of. Also note that water the thing we associate with life was first before land or anything else.

its merely a reference that in the beginning nobody studied the stars or a claim that God hadn't made them yet
